Island vs 'open' galley
We currently have a galley style kitchen and we're about to undergo a renovation.
We are lucky enough that the main wall (3 in pic) is just a partition and non load bearing. We will have to keep an element of the supporting wall (2 in pic) so my idea is to create an island/peninsular off of this structure. We plan on blocking up the current kitchen door to give more countertop space (1 in pic)
My plan is to create an island with a walkthrough but my wife thinks there's not enough counter top space so effectively wants to have cabinets and countertop space all the way down, retaining the galley style albeit with no wall in place.
I think this is a very strange idea, to the point that I don't even know what to search in google to view other layouts like this. In my opinion, it will feel like a school canteen . You would also need to walk through 2 door ways just to get something from the kitchen (admittedly, we do now).
Any thoughts on the two options? Am I mad or justified to think that a galley style with no wall is a valid layout?

Comments (7)Hello Edele, Well one way to maximise space is to reconsider the appliance aspect. So for example you could have a free standing range oven.. which will have hob and oven in 1 piece. This could give you much more space to play with, so possibly you might want a double height fridge, which would be best placed to go at the other end.. The other thing you could easily do is take out those shelves above the worktop and instead have a row of shelving on the rear wall.. Then you could have a row of cabinets all along the top. This gives a slightly different feel to the kitchen, making it more streamlined but also potentially offering you more storage space.. Re positioning the cabinets and painting them can also achieve a new look whilst using what you have.. Replacing the handles with touch/open mechanism hinges on the inside also gives the cupboards a really stylish appearance and nickel or brass (depending on colour of cabinet door) cup handle for the drawers... . If you were to take away the armchair.. you may be able to move along the table a little, add two chair to the head of the table to seat 6 and then at the other end on the far wall (where I suggested some shelving) have a butchers block or table for additional food prep... Comments (11)I agree with 'Kitchens and Baths', you are leaving yourself precious little counterspace to accommodate 2 side-by-side wall ovens? Can't you stack them if you need 2? Also, a warning, I wouldn't be taking anything out of those ovens and "turning to the island" with them...not with a quartz countertop!! You'll have that whole end all scorched...unless you are quick and accurate with lots of trivets! But your "open shelving" is going to look like a pinched-in forgotten corner pantry...you really need more space for them too , if it is going to look right. Right now as it is, 2 feet of them are all but beyond reach (over the lower countertop) and then a mere 2 feet worth of actually OPEN, available space you can reach, then the monster of the floor to ceiling cabinet will be in the way. It will be like reaching around into a closet. I would seriously reconsider this design BEFORE your electrician shows up--and before you order all those (expensive!) cabinets. But as for the island 'crowding' the walkway--it looks as if your drawing says 1.2 meters? That's plenty and more than enough, even for running boisterous kiddos, you're fine there. 3 months agoI think the only way a gallery style kitchen with no wall in place would work, would be to have an overhang on the worktop with seating. Otherwise, I agree, it would odd.
Failing the other suggestions, you could consider blocking up the kitchen door and have an L-shaped kitchen run along that wall and the main wall, then have an island, but this would probably compromise on the dining table.Or could you consider incorpating the island space with a dining table like the attached? Limits the position of the table etc but depends on how you plan to use the space.

3 months agoAn L-shape would allow more flow (i.e large dinner table for xmas).
Might also consider closing up the lounge door. Or perhaps close off the kitchen-hall door (downstairs loo?).

3 months agoThis could work, a meter inbetween countertops. Probably with shallow cabinets, not as bar with stools, because of the traffic lines. I closed off the door, so you have a bit of coat/shoe area in the hallway.

3 months agoThis is much the best layout imho. have an overhanging worktop on the peninsula for the bins to sit under. Could do floating cupboards or not above peninsula depending on what you need
