Does the kitchen island sit on top of flooring?

Flooring should be put in last. It cannot be installed under islands, as it need room to expand and contract accordingly.

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

Flooring should always go first to eliminate issues with appliance heights, and for the potential for changing your mind later about the layout. Some people place plywood of the equivalent height as the finished floor under the cabinets in order to not have the appliance height issue, but that actually makes the flooring person's job harder. What you save in flooring square footage that would otherwise be under the cabinets is probably paid out in labor for the increase in difficulty.

100% Wood. I actually am installing for the second time wood flooring in my kitchen and dining area in fact the whole first floor. I did the second floor in Brazilian Cherry and just love it so much more than the oak that I currently have. However if I had to choose I would choose the oak floors over tile every time. They wear better look so much prettier. And like the previous poster pointed out I hate dirty grout lines.

Why not simply fill the gap. A simply straight board like the kickboard at the base or bottom point where the cabinets meet the floor can be inserted. This can even be enhanced by using a cornice type finish and if you wish add a bit of colour to complement your kitchen . You would also choose to change colour of kickboard/plinth at the floor to keep a nice overall appearance. CJL
