Best approach to paint surround?

Having painted the walls I'm looking to update this fireplace. I'm going to use stick on tiles to the marble and want to paint the surround in a soft black but not sure how to go about it. Wood is currently varnished so I'm assuming sand, prime and paint? Detailing on mantle is going to prove a nightmare to sand and paint so any top tips appreciated! :D

Clean the wooden part carefully with a small sponge, water and sugar soap then allow it to dry thoroughly. If you can get Zinsser bullseye primer 1-2-3 you won't have to sand anything. It is perfect for painting over wood. Do two coats and then paint your chosen colour. Just take your time, tape along the wall edges to avoid bleeding or just paint the primer and fix the colour later if you have enough paint. Frog tape is good but don't leave it on too long (24 hours max) or it will pull off your green paint when you remove it. I would use eggshell paint for wood after the zinsser primer. I used this primer on old dark wood and it was brilliant. There is a water based and an oil based. I seem to remember that the oil based was better for this type of job. F&B does 750ml eggshell paint, the perfect size for 2 coats on this size fireplace.

Hi We used Colour Trend brand and the colour is Kimono. I have attached a picture below. Just added a beam to try and make the house more homey. The second pic is the length of the room and the red wall is in the return. We are in Irleand so the paint brand might not be familiar. Thank you M

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

Hello CG, you can buy some of these and try them on site. From the pictures you posted I get the feeling you have 2 colors with similar saturation both fighting for attention. It's a little too much. I would keep the green but go softer on the red (i.e rust). You can also let yourself be inspired by the grey/silver/bordeaux floral and stripe pillows to create a brand new color scheme using these colors instead. For example, a very soft gray on the walls, gray carpet, grey/bordeaux combo in the curtains and for the sofa accents, pillows similar to these 2. It's decision time. Go for what speaks to you, but do it with elegance :-)
