Kitchen Layout Suggestions

I am building a house and below is the floor plans for the downstairs.

The kitchen is along the right-hand side of the photo.

I'm trying to figure out the best layout for this kitchen to function as a kitchen / dining area as well as a TV area, if possible.

The current plan is to have a one wall kitchen and an island at the front of the kitchen (top of photo), a dining table in the middle, and then a couch facing the back (bottom of photo) wall.

I'm concerned I'm squashing too much into one room.

Are there any suggestions on how to maximise this space?

In particular using that space just inside the door.

I have quite a big family so would need to sit 6-8 at a dining table.

I was considering having the dining table horizontal across the room but that might ruin the flow of it.

Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. As I said, I regret we didn't; our house is great, but it could've been even better!

Hi Helen, The fridge position is ideal so I suggest you move the radiator to the other side of the door and turn the door so its opens back against the fridge. This will increase the feeling of space in the whole dining area. You won't regret the length of your breakfast bar so I wouldn't worry about the gap sizes, 1200 is an ideal but 1000 is more than sufficient. Could you turn the door into the utility so that it opens inwards and not into the kitchen area? It would eliminate having to manoeuvre round the door when open and reduce congestion in the kitchen especially with traffic flow past the end of the breakfast bar. Alternatively you could consider a pocket door which slides into the wall if there is enough space. Good luck!

Hi, We are extending a house and are looking for ideas for the layout for the kitchen/dining/family room. All of this will be new building. The seating area should be enough room for a small couch and a tv and the kitchen can go anywhere within this room. Ideally we would like an island/peninsula set up so that our backs will not always be to the room. The window at the side is a high level one and may not be included in the build. The utility wall is approximately 2500. Any ideas or suggestions very welcome. Thank you.
