What shall I do with this fireplace?
I've inherited this fireplace in the house we bought recently. I'll be honest, I loathe everything about it. Whilst I do really like period features, I'm a much bigger fan of the clean lined slate fire surrounds of the same era, and find the bows and swags of this just too girly for my aesthetic. Plus the mantel is just too high which makes it hard to hang anything over it. But money is tight after doing an extension and loft conversion, and we have more pressing things to spend it on, so for the forseeable future I'm going to have to live with it.
The thing I think can change most easily (and probably the bit I hate the most) is the hearth. Realistically, I'm going to just have to retile, as whilst I'd like a slate hearth, its an awkward shape that would mean custom templating and it doesn't seem sensible to spend the cash on an expensive hearth that we may then have to remove in 3 or 4 years if we get rid of the fireplace. So I'm trying to work out what to do with the hearth tiles. All the lovely modern geometric patterned quarry tiles I like don't won't go with the insert tiles and I can't replace the insert tiles without pulling out the entire surround. Any ideas?

The hearth is beyond horrible Lisa. It’s like some sort of 70’s monstrosity with cheap ugly bumpy tiles. It has to go. Urgently.

I think would paint the fireplace and mirror white...would match the trim work of your room and your lighter furnishings. Something that was suggested to me...use some fabric or poster board to cover the wood on both, just to give you an idea of what it would look like white. That way you are not committed once the paint has been applied to the wood. I love Dytectur's idea of wallpapering the room and having the fireplace wall white. Would really pop! Comments (4)You could do a bench with a top that opened for storage. This way family & guests have a place to sit and take off their shoes or boots when entering. You could also put hooks on the wall above the bench for a place to hang coats or keys. A second option could be a sideboard or dresser. I think the gas fireplace that you have is really cute, but might look at a stone slab on the floor instead of the mat that is there now. Comments (0)Hello there. I’d like a change from my over mantel mirror which I feel is out of proportion. The width of the mantelpiece is 140cm and the height from the mantel shelf to the coving is 108cm. I’ve got my eye on this one from Laura Ashley which comes in either 60cm or 100cm diameter. I’m drawn to the larger size but that will mean probably resting it the edge on the mantelpiece because of the restriction of the ceiling height. Would this look odd with a round mirror and do you think it would even suit my fireplace? Many thanks....See More

As it is a period fireplace I think those lovely black and white tiles would look lovely. Or if you prefer something plainer look at black Quarry Tiles or slate tiles. These are for sale at many online tile suppliers and Topps Tiles.
