What shall I do with this fireplace?
I've inherited this fireplace in the house we bought recently. I'll be honest, I loathe everything about it. Whilst I do really like period features, I'm a much bigger fan of the clean lined slate fire surrounds of the same era, and find the bows and swags of this just too girly for my aesthetic. Plus the mantel is just too high which makes it hard to hang anything over it. But money is tight after doing an extension and loft conversion, and we have more pressing things to spend it on, so for the forseeable future I'm going to have to live with it.
The thing I think can change most easily (and probably the bit I hate the most) is the hearth. Realistically, I'm going to just have to retile, as whilst I'd like a slate hearth, its an awkward shape that would mean custom templating and it doesn't seem sensible to spend the cash on an expensive hearth that we may then have to remove in 3 or 4 years if we get rid of the fireplace. So I'm trying to work out what to do with the hearth tiles. All the lovely modern geometric patterned quarry tiles I like don't won't go with the insert tiles and I can't replace the insert tiles without pulling out the entire surround. Any ideas?

Comments (13)I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Comments (11)Ooh Darzy I like your thinking. Actually the curtains are taupe and a nearly mint green - not stripes more they blend into each other (see pic). But if I got some art picking out those 2 colours that could work. I love teal but not sure about it on this wall. Maybe coral could be nice or is that too on trend? I also have an old chair I need to get reupholstered and was struggling for ideas for that. Comments (7)Rule of thumb is usually 2/3rd's the width of the mantle is a size that will look comfortable. Over mantle mirrors do add a 'finished' feel and look very sophisticated but it depends what style you're really going for. I quite like the window style mirrors you can get now for a twist on the traditional over mantle mirrors. Can tie classic to industrial or mid century quite happily....See More

4 months agoAs it is a period fireplace I think those lovely black and white tiles would look lovely. Or if you prefer something plainer look at black Quarry Tiles or slate tiles. These are for sale at many online tile suppliers and Topps Tiles.
