Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Rooms

what size TV over fireplace

Hello, we like the tv over the fireplace and plan to get a Samsung Frame for a more together/artsy look. We enjoy our 65 inch tv today and have doubts going down to 55. If it makes sense however we will but super undecided. Any thoughts appreciated. On photos you can see indication on 65 vs 55. Thanks!

Tbh, they’re both quite tricky. One is too big for the chimney breast, the other lines up with the mantle. if i had to choose probably the bigger one but centred between the mantle and picture rail

Have you watched a tv at this height before for comfort?

Thank you for your input 🙏🏼 we usually recline when watching so think it will be okay. You are right. My love for a large screen is getting in the way of common sense 😂 55 maybe better in this case

Rule of thumb is usually 2/3rd's the width of the mantle is a size that will look comfortable. Over mantle mirrors do add a 'finished' feel and look very sophisticated but it depends what style you're really going for. I quite like the window style mirrors you can get now for a twist on the traditional over mantle mirrors. Can tie classic to industrial or mid century quite happily.

There are a thousand ways to use mirrors beautifully in a living room -- just not any old mirror in any old place, that I would agree with I think you should have art over the fireplace, and I see potential for using a scattering of small mirrors to bring light into the alcove and counterbalance the somewhat awkward angle of the TV. I'm assuming there's nowhere else to put the TV? I agree that the furniture in that corner is rather too flimsy to handle either the size of the TV or the bold black boxes of the fireplace and hearth. How about a striking floor vase? Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! Thanks again for the brilliant advice, I really appreciate it.

Hi. I think a Chesterfield would be nice, you can find some small ones c5ft or so which will allow for a narrow lamp table or trunk. I'd go for a ŵall to wall bookcase behind the sofa with a couple of ŵall lights affixed. I don't know what styles you like but perhaps french doors painted in a dark grey to give a crittall look. Does the tv fit in the alcove if you were to add shelves and then add art over the fire with a large mirror on the ŵall facing you? I would keep colours light (is the kitchen grey?) and although it would fill the space a little I might add a narrow upholstered footstool which you can use as extra seating and/or add a tray on one half which you can accessorise

The important thing with a tv is the picture quality, not the size of it, and it has been proven that TV’s should be at eye level or just below when you are seated for maximum comfort. I personally would not have a wall mounted tv as the viewing angle hurts my neck after a while. However, if you want a huge tv on the wall then surely that’s your choice and your choice alone.

Aesthetically I understand why you are putting the TV above the fireplace but it does not work practically as it’s too high to watch comfortably. The size is less important than the quality of the TV as Sonia says. I would go for the smaller screen but put on a tv unit on the floor to the left of the fireplace. You will get neck and back strain otherwise.
