Hi I struggle to layout my 18 ft long 9 ft wide family living room

Hi, I really struggle with furniture placement in my narrow small living room, it is 18 foot long and 9 foot wide. We don’t have a lot of privacy either with windows been so big it drives me insane! I was going to paint it white and get a beige couch cover but I’m always moving my couch to try and create warmth and balance! unfortunately our door opens up onto the fireplace. Any ideas welcome ? Thank you

As you say, the position of the door is splitting the room in half. We had a similar issue and had the door moved to one end. It was a big enough job but worth it. We did this when renovating the house. Then we zoned the room. One end a study and the other end sitting and TV. We also changed the hearth to a lighter colour. We considered taking the fireplace away as we don’t use it but retained it in the end.

I would paint the room the same colour as the feature wall is emphasising the narrowness. I would change the curtains to a simple neutral linen and remove the blinds as they are killing the light in the room. To improve privacy, would hedging be an option? Put a large mirror over the mantle and use good sized rugs to zone the area. I think I would try putting the TV on the opposite side and have the window end as a sitting/reading area. The darker side of the room would benefit from side tables with lamps.

Here's what I've found after living in and visiting many tract homes- LR-13x18 FR-12x16 (and that they not be in the middle of the traffic flow pattern aka many tract homes post ww2 till about the late 50's) Kitchen (no eating area) 9x11 DR/Nook or other eating area 10x10 Entry-at least 3'6" wide 4' better Bedrooms (good design would at least provide 2 good bed walls aka no doors or windows in it) MBR-12x13 w/ at least 10 linear feet of closets All other bedrooms-10x10 with at least 5 linear ft of closets all closets 2' deep, Baths-5x8 but 5x9 better if fixtures lined up on one wall and tub/shower at end 7x8 and 8x8 with the tub/shower fully accessible if it's 5 ft long 6x8 if it's a 3' shower (fixtures lined up on 2 opposite walls). If you look and many floor plans the best ones will have all of this. Note that square footage does not have to be a lot-ciculation/flow between rooms helps this.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.
