Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Wood for wall unit linings?

I am sourcing materials to build a recessed mirror cupboard run above the sink/toilet. I have no idea where to start with sourcing the wood surround? Obviously it has to have a nice edge to it and be reasonably water tight as in the bathroom. Any advice gratefully received!

I would have thought that the interior of the cupboards would be a wood laminate rather than solid wood so you could have the carcass in wood and the interior in ply and then laminate. However that does sound quite tricky to do unless you are very good at diy and have all the correct tools etc

I was thinking more to just use standard cabinets and then attach the wood surround?

Once again, carolins has taken the words right out of my mouth. I sometimes feel like a crusader for entertainment centers and lowering art! You have a dynamic room with so much potential. Your wall could look amazing with the armoire carolins has pictured above. Of course, lower your sconces so that they're a about 4" below the top of the armoire and about 7" from the sides. Your fireplace should be your focal point with your wall being strong but not competing. Rooms get personality from smaller accents but you have too many little things that take away from the great colored pillows and the picture. Be careful not to hang things in straight lines--top of pictures should never line up with tops of doors or curtain rods. I wish we could see your fireplace in another photo. Chairs should form conversation groups with the couch like Carolyn has outlined. I like your chandelier but you might think about lowering it or moving it above a dining table--it looks rather lost way up there.

First before you think of putting grey on your walls take into account the light in your kitchen. Where do you live? Is it sunny most of the year? Is your sky grey 4 to 6 months of the year in the winter and spring? Grey can be very depressing when you are surrounded by it day after day. My vote is for white walls or a light color. You also have to take into account what the other rooms are painted that are open to the kitchen's sight line.

Hello, We are looking for some advice on how to finish this wall in our small living room. The chimney breast wall only comes out 13cm so our first idea of console tables won't work. We are therefore thinking of getting a built in unit that will be about 35cm high - to the socket which will extend the length of the 3 walls, this has been done in other houses in our estate. We are thinking of a nice wood veneer and painting it? Would we possibly paint the chimney breast wall the same colour or the two other walls and leave the middle one plain? All ideas and suggestions are greatly welcomed! thanks! First two pictures are our living room currently, and third picture is an idea of the unit.

Any wood of preference will do as long as you treat it with a clear coat varnish - ideally the more layers the better. Most woods have reasonable water resistance for that area as it’s. It directly exposed to running water. Larch, cedar, birch, oak and poplar are the most commonly used for interiors. Birch ply however is both cheaper and looks amazing in surrounds due to its layered edges.
