Help with plug sockets!

Hello Houzz family
We are having a single storey extension built at the back of our house. Kitchen/diner and at the stage where the builder is asking about electrics and how many plugs. Any advice on how to go about understanding how many we will need?

We've just had our kitchen/diner done and needed nearly twice the amount from the initial plan. We've only got one run with appliances in the cupboards so have most of our sockets in the units themselves and then think if you have any or want to use appliances on the top of the counter. Then think of where you'll sit and where your furniture will be as you'll want a socket near. I would always have more than you think you'll need. I know someone who had theirs done and didn't have as many as they needed for use on the counter top.

Work out how many appliances you have, hob, oven, washer, dryer, fridge, freezer, air fryer, food mixers, kettle, Alexa, music centre, charging points for mobiles (so add some sockets with a USB) and other things you use. Don’t skimp on them.

Thanks! Yeah I tried to rotate the bed so the headboard would be opposite the radiator but it meant the wardrobe doors wouldn't open. I may need to change the bed frame to include storage space alright but it would need to add height not width which is tricky to find ready made. I like the idea of a loft bed but since it's rented I don't think I could really do anything that involves attaching to walls...

Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. As I said, I regret we didn't; our house is great, but it could've been even better!

Do Light switches and plug sockets have to match?

Hi, I am building my house and have seen really nice and somewhat expensive light switches. Now I cannot afford matching plug sockets but was wondering if it mattered? IE, copper type switches and a more standard white plug sockets? Thanks

I have 6 double sockets in my kitchen/diner (3 above kitchen worktops, 3 in dining area) excluding those for built-in appliances, and another in the utility cupboard for my washing machine.

I was paranoid about not having enough sockets and went big on the number! I have 10 double sockets in our kirchen/dining/living space - that doesnt include the sockets for apliances which are behind the units. I'm glad i did, it’s convenient to be able to plug in anywhere although in reality, i think i could have managed easily with 7 or 8.

We did as Daisy suggests, imagined ourselves using the space and placed plugs accordingly. we have:
- one each side of the sofa - with usb ports
- one near the dining table
- one on the wall behind the island seating space
- one in the utility cupboard
- 4 above the L shaped run of work tops (two would have been enough)
- one on the end of the island with usb

Thank you all so much! This gives me some really useful tips and an idea of how important it is to have enough plugs given the amount of appliances and gadgets we use in everyday life!
