Can I get a utility room in this layout?

We’re in the process of getting a new kitchen fitted and I’d love to add a utility room at the same time (mainly to avoid having the washer and drier in the kitchen and free up space for storage).

The problem is I can’t for the life of me figure out where this additional room could go? The middle room (pictured below) only gets light from the window and door on the right hand side, so running a wall from the hallway to the back wall would completely block the light coming in. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I can see you already have under stairs cupboard. Would putting your laundry there inside a cupboard be an option? It wouldn't give you much utility space, but then wouldn't reduce your living space. Do you have other storage space? Do you mind not having much room to sort out washing? All depends on what is most important

The only way to do this involves moving some cabinets. There is a lot of vertical space available opt 1) remove the upper cabinets near the window. Place the freezer on top of counter. Use the former freezer area to build in shoe cubbies. opt 2) Move the tall pantry cabinet up. Underneath the pantry cabinet, build in shoe cubbies. opt 3) move the freezer up to meet the bottom of the upper cabinets. Put she storage underneath freezer. You'll need to replace the counter with a smaller counter that will be over the washer and dryer only.

In these plans I do not like the way guests will have to walk through the utility room to get to the downstairs toilet. At the same time I do want a big utility and mud room. Could anyone suggest an alternative arrangement? Thank you.

Is the kitchen already in progress as removing the wall between kichen and living may give more options plus more light?

Hi Minnie, that was our initial thought too but the kitchen is a single story extension and the wall is holding up the back of the house. Not sure if that means it’s impossible to remove entirely but I assume it would be expensive and include beams, structural engineer, etc.

Hi Kate,

I hadn’t considered this before but I actually really like this suggestion. The cupboard space is tiny but it could work if we extend the hallway. Thanks so much for the idea!

If you have the height, then stacking the washing machine and dryer by building a shelf between them can work really well. Hopefully something like that might give people just enough space to sort/fold washing without it ending up in the nearby living room.
