fitted wardrobes..I really need some advice!

I’m having fitted wardrobes built into 3 bedrooms and a media unit built into an office room downstairs. I need to know what colours I’d like when the surveyor comes in 2 days time and Im really struggling.

I love the dark blue or dark grey wardrobes I’ve seen on here, for the media unit and the master bedroom, but Im not sure if Im making a huge mistake and they will look dated in a few years time?

I’d also consider a pale grey but I think that might also become dated soon.

Both rooms are very bright and have lots of light in them.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on any of this? Many thanks in advance.

Maybe consider simplifying 'greys' into blue greys which tend to appear cool in comparison to taupes which are warmer (and contain soem red) and finally greys which contain some yellow such as greener greys. Whilst I may get 'shot' down for saying this, there are such things as trends and cool grey has been a huge trend but it has moved on to warmer colours. The deeper darker blue grey in the image would also go with warmer colours and so it could be a good idea, whereas a paler grey would be more difficult to pair with warmer colours in my opinion.

If I was to choose a timeless colour for wardrobes I would go for a warm stone colour. I spend alot of time on instagram for my work and beiges have returned. Maybe think about colour temperature as a starting point?

Thanks colourhappy, I really appreciate your advice on this.

One thing I hadn’t considered was that cooler grey would be more difficult to pair with warmer colours, so the pale greys are probably not the best choice for me.

I agree with you about ‘trends’ and the grey movement. Which is why I’m confused about liking the darker grey colour. Maybe it is just that it’s warmer. Thanks

I'm not sure if your walls are a "peachy" earth tone????...."if" so orange/turquoise are really in right now and could certainly brighten it up for you....I've recently gone through the same thing with our home in FLA ....the walls are a yellow + pale turquoise accents but adding orange/red to the room would have been the last thing I would ever have thought of + we centered the light fixture so that it was centered on the wall and not off to one side like the previous owner had it....you can see from the "before and after" pics what a huge difference it made...one thing leads to the next....the new chair covers I made a huge difference too but it was quite the job!....I didn't add a lot of orange/red but to us it made a huge difference

Just wanted to add something regarding the steps since I had also asked for advice on them: we had steps installed in slate, but unfortunately they did not turn out to look very nice, so will need to get redone . Was wondering if we should also incorporate some of the bricks seen on the porch, perhaps as risers covered by blue limestone or slate just to tie everything together?

My first instinct was to move it to a garage/basement for good storage but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prime inside and out with Kilz then apply a couple of coats of white semi-gloss (use good quality paint.. Benjamin Moore) in the same white that you'd use for all the trim in your room. Be sure to lightly sand and 'tack rag' between coats. If the handles are removable by all means remove them prior to painting...fill in holes, sand smooth and paint as previous sentence. Set up inside the way you find most functional. Buy nice new knobs ( maybe crystal?) and, if it is as tall as it appears, have crown molding installed to create a custom look. It is probably far better built than anything else you could find.

I feel your dilemma. I nearly chose white wardrobes as I just couldn’t decide so was going for a “safe” option. Nothing wrong with white at all but I finally chose a taupe shade (Sharpes Stone option) and I’m very pleased. It’s neutral and just goes with so many colours. Love them. Here’s a rubbish picture of them!

Just personal opinion but I prefer wardrobes not to dominate rooms given their size so would opt for the same colour as the walls (or something with little contrast to make the bed etc the focus).

if the media unit contains a tv i might go for the dark colour there so the tv blends in

Thanks Minnie, I agree that a darker colour would be better for hiding the TV.
Because the wardrobes are the first thing you’ll see when you walk into the room I was thinking of making them more of a statement piece and something really beautiful to look at but maybe they would be really overwhelming…hmm so much to consider! Thank you!

Also just bear in mind that wardrobes are quite 'blocky' and so the darker they are the more ominous they can appear. A darker grey may appear warmer than a paler grey and because it's darker you can match with other colours more easily. You get a clash when you pair pale 'greyed' neutrals together from different hue families, it can just look awkward.

I was also considering wardrobes very similar to yours for our guest bedroom. l will be opting for an off white/ivory and then adding the colour on the walls ie dark green.

As opposed to having them in MFC you could just have them in MDF and then paint them as and when you wish in a different colour.

Thanks Daisy. I think I’m coming round to the idea of a lighter colour as I do get bored easily. I think a lighter colour and then adding a dark wooden floor and a large colourful rug and darker paint colours might be the way forward.
I like @colourhappy’s points about choosing warmer pale colours too, which I hadn’t considered before. Thank you!

I thought about mirror doors but I’ve decided against them due to having small children and their handprints get everywhere!!

I do like how they bounce the light around though

I did the wardrobes in my sons rooms and went quite bold in a darker blue as they chose. I think a more muted shade is better as Sonia, Daisy and colourhappy advise.
