Our house was built in the 1930s and there was fitted wardrobes built in the eaves in the bedrooms. I have dismantled one but have been left with 2 wooden posts and I’m unsure if it’s holding part of the roof up. Please could someone look at the photos attached and let me know their thoughts? I have spoken to a couple of builders and they don’t think it is b it can’t say 100%.
Hmm, interesting. Those rough finished beams and posts suggest support to me, unless they weren’t finished as they were being enclosed. Maybe the other side was removed? Might be worth checking with a surveyor?
But the photos show that the beam (under purlin) is only supported by the upright (strut/prop) on this side of the room. You may be able to remove the strut/prop but only it you replace it with an extra structural element from the wall plate to the ridge beam. This sounds more complicated than it is although it will make a hole in plasterwork that will need to be replaced….. there is the further risk that is you remove some of the plaster to get to the underside of the roof you may uncover additional jobs you weren’t expecting
