Staircase sanding down advice

Hi all, I'm looking for some advise for the best sander/ stain stripper to buy to tackle my stained oak staircase, it's foing to be a big job but will be well worth it when it's done, any recommendations much appreciated as a Google search is not providing any clear winners. Thank you in advance 😊

We are in the process of filling our gaps with pine slithers (they cam in different widths) You can buy them online. You do suffer from bald/ red knees when you hammer them in and then need to chisel them down so they are flush with the rest of the floor but it really does help. What you can also order with the pine slithers is pine saw dust with resin - you mix the two up and can fill the really narrow gaps which the slithers don't fit into. If you don't mind spending the time doing this I would recommend it yourself (especially if you're worried about costs), depending how big the surface is, and then have someone in to do the sanding. The varnishing you can also do you yourself with a normal paint roller. We also recently had a quote for sanding and varnishing and I think it came to £500 for mid size living room and 3 m length hall.

thanks all.. I'm trying the steel wool & vinegar option on test board and also have briwax limed. testing a few effects... this is one coat of solution soaked 1 day with wax rubbed in. it might be a lil silvery

You can leave the handrail the same distance from the wall as it is now. Leave it connected to the newel post at the top; remove the newel post at the bottom, and add what's called a 'return' to anchor the bottom end to the wall. Then add a couple of brackets going up the stairs. The challenge is that the return should match the profile of the handrail, in order to blend, but check at the home center or a lumber yard/mill to see if you can match it (take measurements/drawings/close-up photos, etc.). As for painting the stairs--be careful with "fun" graphics. The treads and risers need to be clearly defined and regular. For example, a plaid or check that doesn't match the tread and riser exactly at each step is a trip hazard and may not meet building codes. People need to be able to see the treads clearly even without paying attention to them. Walking is an unconscious activity and we need to make it as easy as possible. Confusing patterns are a menace. In NYC, they put new edges on treads on one stairway at one train station that were designed to make them less slippery. However, they also made it more difficult to discern the edge of the tread. In 6 weeks, more than 1,400 people fell down those stairs. Then they redid them. Over 90% of injuries on stairs happen during descent. I highly recommend Bill Bryson's great book 'At Home--A Short History of Private Life'. The NYC anecdote above came from Chapter 14--'The Stairs'. Fascinating and amusing book. My house is 100 years old, so I feel your pain dealing with the changes and additions that happened over time.

How to stain stair banister+ type of stain?Advice please

I want to stain the front newel and banister and then i am painting the spindles white. All i want to to darken it a bit but to create a nicer contrast but not too dark. I am just unsure how to stain the banister or what product to use?? I was in woodies and they advised me to use the Ronseal interior Varnish that is a 2 in 1 stain,So i was thinking maybe a dark oak maybe has anyone used this? Or should i use a separate stain amd then clear varnish??? Do i need to pre-stain the wood with a conditioner?? I have sanded it back with 80 sandpaper. I plan to use BIN primer on spindles and then satin finish, to avoid sanding each one. Any advice appreciated, as im a bit of a novice!!!
