help me finish the ensuite bathroom - what would you do?

We’re unsure how to finish it, it’s a pale blue from F&B but I feel like it’s too samey. The vanity unit was given to us but we haven’t painted it until we have an idea of colour scheme.

Also missing a mirror.

Thoughts would be much appreciated!

Hello Nathan - Thats a lovely bathroom with lots of potential and I am sure you will be able to transform it into something amazing!

I suggest painting the vanity unit a dark color - it will help ground the unit and add structure to the room. I think may be a dark blue or a green would look nice. You can also update the handles to match the chrome fittings in the bathroom.

With regards to painting the wall - I suggest you paint the wall a light colour like white (unless you want something more colorful) and add in a big mirror on the wall. As big as you can get with the mirror so it frames the vanity unit. I also suggest painting the ceiling and the wall the same colour - it will blur the slanting walls and you will not notice them!

I suggest adding some open shelving (wood) on the wall behind the loo to soften the overall look and add in some warmth. You can use this for storage as well as some styling like baskets and plants. And if you can add in some wall art!

I love your marble tiles. The taupe wall is rather pale and I see what you mean about samey but I think once the vanity is painted as already suggested it will make such a difference. However, maybe a darker taupe would go better, something like Elephants Breath. Charcoal grey for the vanity would look good but I like the blue too. Once you’ve added a nice mirror it will make such a difference.

Sure you can, we do it all the time in rental properties. Old houses have windows in the showers and renters do not take care of tile. You just need the right saw and then tub trim. Not everyone can tile- it takes a lot of patience and a tile saw. And if you are not a DIYer naturally it can be a big mess. We have done a lot of repairs to walls from botched tile jobs. And hiring out is expensive. You say you have a small budget. Chances are with the look of the tile in the pic- you may have water damage already. Powdy, it all depends on your skill level and actual budget and what you find underneath you remove the tiles.

Hi there, We're in Kilkenny and we're lighting designers. A lot depends on budget but if you are re-fitting areas we could recommend fittings for the walls plus how about highlighting the top of wall with a good bathroom uplighter around edge - LED perhaps. The issue is that it is too flat as the colours are similar. If you added more depths of light it would help greatly. Of course we do a full range of bathroom fittings too so even a simple thing like two well chosen wall lights would help significantly. Hi. I hope you don't mind me saying but removing one of the bathrooms may potentially devalue the property even if they are small. Removing the bath may also alienate any families when it comes to selling. Maybe check with an estate agent unless this isn't an issue for you. Have you thought about combining a bath with a really decent shower? Luxury hotels often do this. In terms of style, what is the rest of the house like? Look at the light in the room for colours, you can go dark but combine with really decent lighting. If you like blue, why not try navy and white maybe with some bright accessories? Navy is very on trend at the moment (and a classic bathroom colour!) but can't find a great bathroom image. I personally would go for something fairly classic with a couple of contemporary elements.

Hi Isobel, Could you add an obscured film to the window instead? I would have thought that this would be fine with planning as it's removable. I'm assuming that the planning restriction is because you're in a conservation area? The films come in different finishes, I've had a fairly successful go at applying a sandblasted one. There are specialist companies that will do it for you though
