In general, it's a matter of contrast - in tone, texture, depth, pattern, and/or material etc - so that they each have their own character. Complementary but without competing or attempting to match. Often a darker floor is selected. Here, though they are each wood material and the tones are similar, we find the contrast in the pattern and dimension of the plank flooring.
