Ideas for jazzing up hallway and stairs?

We have recently moved into a small Victorian terrace (2 up, 2 down with rear extension and outbuilding) and are in the process of repainting and making our mark on the home.

2 year plan (currently forecast beginning of 2024) includes removal of carpet and replacement with a stair runner, painted stairs (probably railings - how original!) but would be open to other suggestions.

We have some budget / effort set aside this year to make some changes to the stair and hallway - removing wallpaper, changing lights etc and I would like to do two things:

Make use of the dead space in the stairs - perhaps adding shelves?
Remove existing wallpaper, but I am keen to shake the colours up if there are any bold colour / shape suggestions

For colour continuity, downstairs hallway is Elephant’s Breath and upstairs bedrooms will be Dead Salmon, Setting Plaster & Oval Room Blue. Other colours in our household palette include Hague and Incharya blues, unidentified cream; white and a Dulux olive shade.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by dead space? Is it the wall with the picture? I personally wouldn’t clutter up a staircase with shelving but it is your home. A stair runner will look very smart and it sounds like you have lots of interesting colour in other rooms. I particularly like herringbone tweed look runners. I have Oval Room Blue in my kitchen and it always gets admiring comments. I would continue Elephants Breath up the stairs for continuity, but how about something like Railings for the banister? It would add a punch without being garish.

Congratulations on your new home! How exciting!

We think the paint colours you have selected sound lovely and a great place to start. The previous owners have placed wallpaper on opposite walls which has the effect of making the staircase look far more narrow than it actually is. I think it would look better to have the same treatment (paint / wallpaper) on all of the walls instead to open it up further.

removing the door to kitchen would be easiest & cheapest way to open up & brighten the hall area. Next best, but more costly would be replacing door with one with glass panels. Look for used one in 2nd hand or @ your local Habitat for Humanity store. Keep the one you take off just in case other one gets damaged and needs to be replaced. Replacing only two panels would not achieve much I don't think. A mirror should only be placed where it can reflect something of interest & expand the room. If I recall, the staircase is what would be reflected? A photo collage frame? I think more colour is called for here. Your home, your choice. Bottom line is you decide what is right for your space. As you have likely noticed everyone has a different opinion, professional or not. Most important in re-styling a space is what the home owner wants to use the space for & to be their taste.

Carpet on the stairs will help with sound! But if stairs are good enough, just paint them all white! Add a stencil on the riser - numbers or a saying is always fun...or even add family member names. Do you like bold colors? If so, the handrail wall could be a green apple. Something that works w the pretty stain glass. Also upstairs, there looks to be space to make that a built in bookcase. As for under the stairs, you can take out studs but you can build deep shelves and give it a stair step look. If you have large gym bags, make some large enough to fit sliding them in. Whenever we put in storage like that, we add plugs for iPads and cellphones. Easy way to remember to charge them! Also, a narrow bench on wall opposite storage will help w putting on shoes.

Nice art but a bit too large for this spot. See how the frame is above your door frame. If it were mine, since the door appears to open into the next room, I'd consider modifying the sideboard to be used as a rad cover and lower the art so its center is 5' above the floor. It can stand on its own, and you can paint the frame the same color as the sideboard to unify them and the space. You might also add an art light that attaches to the piece for more evening interest.

Hi, I have pine wood stairs, skirting, doors and architrave and I'm looking for some nice ideas to brighten it all up without painting the architrave , skirting and doors. That would be too much of a big job. I thought maybe cream for the walls but I'd like some bolder ideas and maybe the same cream on the instep of the stairs. Don't really know how to proceed. I'd like to show off the pine to its best. Also, it's a 3 bed bungalow so not a big mansion place, should fit the style of the house. I like a bit of black too and colour. What about pictures? Are they a bad idea? Thank you

Thanks Sonia. we are thinking about shelves because there is an alcove space on the left hand side (it isnt fully visible from the photos but is about 13cm) and we feel we should be using every inch for its potential! love the herringbone and contrast with floor tiles, looks fab

You could consider keeping the staircase simple. Perhaps replace the patterned paper with something plain. Remove the books and picture. Add a large statement chandelier or light fitting of your choice and perhaps replace the picture with a large mirror to bounce the light around. As Sonia said, I’m not sure about the ‘dead space’ but that’s where you could move your books to if you love them in the hallway.
