Hall and stairs

Hi, I have pine wood stairs, skirting, doors and architrave and I'm looking for some nice ideas to brighten it all up without painting the architrave , skirting and doors. That would be too much of a big job. I thought maybe cream for the walls but I'd like some bolder ideas and maybe the same cream on the instep of the stairs. Don't really know how to proceed. I'd like to show off the pine to its best. Also, it's a 3 bed bungalow so not a big mansion place, should fit the style of the house. I like a bit of black too and colour. What about pictures? Are they a bad idea? Thank you

I painted that one area and then just lost steam....only looking at it again now. I do like the idea of dark & light but kittihawke you are right about being careful with it. The only thing I've noticed if you break the grey with strong bright white it looks fantastic so I might hand a number of white frames in the hall, stairs & landing.

Sliding Door in hallway at bottom of stairs - Regulations

Is it OK to place a sliding door at the bottom of a stairs to minimise the draft from a hallway? The stairs forks off at a 90 degree angle halfway down a long hallway, you don't see it when looking down the hallway, the first step is flush with the hallway's right wall, the sliding door therefore would be placed on the side wall of the hallway, sliding either left or right and not impinging on the hallway. The stairs itself is bricked walled each side so is enclosed in its own space. I wondering if placing a sliding door will go against any building regulations. Thanks.
