Open plan ideas

This is our current floor plan, we would like to knock though the wall between the kitchen and the dining room (stud wall) and create an open plan living area with kitchen, dining and living area for family time. Any ideas how we could configure this space, we plan to completely move the hob and oven but unsure how to layout.

Could you bring the kitchen into the dining room slightly, i.e a row of cabinets from where the fireplace ends up to the doors leading out to the garden. Then install a very large kitchen island in front of the kitchen leaving a walkway behind. You could then place a lovely dining table in the top left corner and potentially some comfortable seating by the bay window in the dining room.

You would have plenty of space to create a large open-plan kitchen diner and maybe even a small seating area. It's hard to say much without the plan dimensions for the space.

With our layout package, we usually start with an in-depth brief which looks into how much storage you need, how many people you need to seat, what items you already have for the space, how the light works in the room - and much more, to work out the best layouts. It may be worth asking yourself a few of these questions to start getting an idea of how much space the kitchen requires and where this is best placed in the room.

Given where the utility is, I would personally begin by looking at a dining table at the front of the house and a kitchen on the two side walls at the back along with an island and or peninsula combination.

I hope this helps - I think you are going to end up with a really lovely looking open plan area. Do also bear in mind though that to me, this wall you would like to move looks like a structural wall so a beam maybe needed which would up the costs a fair amount - so if you have a budget I would begin by looking into this and talking to some builders or structural engineer if you haven't already.

Hi, One of the possible plans is to block off the window and put tall units with eye level ovens, larder, fridge freezer etc. keep the sink run in a straight line with sink, dishwasher, pull out bin and in the island put in the hob with drawers underneath. Either put in ceiling mounted extractor or a downdraft depending on what stage of build you are at. Hope this helps, we are in Northern Ireland if you but do work throughout the uk. And also there is some original tile left and I was toying with the idea of tiling over that strip all the way to the wall to create a small corridor of tile as you come in the front door for the 'hallway' that once was, to add interest and a sense of separation between kitchen and hall because the door opens into the kitchen directly which isn't ideal (we had to do away with a small pocket door and partition wall there.) and then do the rest in marmoleum. Would this look weird or should I just do the marmoleum throughout?

Loads of options as you basically have a black canvas. I love a rich teal, or dark turquoise. You could also consider wine or pink, or indeed red, but careful of tones
