boring hall, no budget apart from paint
Comments (11)There are several ways to visually widen a narrow hall and shorten a long hall. Floor: To widen a narrow hall use a diagonal floor treatment, e.g. stencil large diamond pattern on floor. To shorten the hall, use two or three runners to break up the length of floor rather than one long runner. Walls: Long walls can appear shorter by breaking up the horizontal lines.. This can be done by arranging pictures in groups rather than distributing them along the length of the wall. Hang a large painting, print or tapestry on the end wall or paint your door an accent color to create a feature. Another way to shorten a wall is create vertical sections on the wall. Trim can be used to create panels, groupings of art can create sections or large objects such as a mirror can define the segments. Directed lighting illuminating these section will also de-emphasize the length of walls. Ceiling: Minimize the visual impact of a long hall by bringing attention to the ceiling. One approach is to align the panel wall sections with ceiling panels or coffers. Or hang interesting pendant lights or a bold chandelier to redirect visual interest away from the walls....See Morebungalow hallway
Comments (2)I wish I could help but I have exactly the same problem! I hope someone comes along and gives you some great advice. Mine's long and narrow with a small L shape at the end. Only light is through the front door, it's even been painted in the same colour scheme as yours and even though it faces south, still looked gloomy. In 15 years I've never once been happy with it! I did paint my dado white if that helps....See MoreNarrow dark hall how to light it.
Comments (5)Hi, I have the same problem in my hallway. If your budget is tight, just replacing the ceiling light with something like a starburst pendant with at least 6 bulbs would instantly improve the space. Also I would hang some bold and bright artwork on the walls and put a runner on the floor. Mirrors are also great for your space. I'm attaching a photo example. See how the eye is instantly drawn to the bold door? Also if you can repaint the wall, I would recommend you to use glossy finish paint so the light can bounce off the walls too. I'm happy to help you further at no fee via email, if you're stuck. I give lots of free advice on my blog so you can check it out for inspiration and advice. Link should be in my profile. Comments (8)Maybe if you stuck to one colour scheme such as white and purple or grey and lime green, colours that compliment each other. You could have a cabinet on the larger side with some family photos or a mirror above it and maybe a single colour on the top half of the wall and a complimentary wallpaper on the bottom half. You could go for wood on the floor or a simple soft carpet but it might get muddy. You could also have a bench with storage underneath for shoes and bags, but try get a colour that matched the walls. You could also paint the banisters if they don't match the rest of the room....See Morekazzh
