What type of paint for stair stringer?

After seeing a similar stairway and colour scheme in a mid-century property on The Modern House website, we have decided we are going to paint the stair stringer black or anthracite. The treads are restored Sapele wood and the orange/golden tone complement black well. However, do we go for satin or gloss?

Anthracite/gunmetal/matt but be mindfull of the walls under stairs Because loses transparency and black will be more visible

thank you all for your comments. @Julie I forgot to mention that the children's art wall will be a mirror soon now that there won't be little hand prints all over it. This may bounce some light around. I was thinking of a warm sagey green which would work well with the oak wood but I need some drama!! It's funny looking at the pictures totally gives you a different perspective of the room. I now think I need to paint the front door in a pale color... @Judy I like the shade secluded beach def dont want blue - the tester pots were nothing like the shade on the charts... @Christine def agree re pops of color - baby's feet are going into another room. @ pcmom yellow would definitely brighten it up

Change the flooring. It's hard to tell what to suggest since we can't see what the entry opens up to. With that gorgeousness staircase, you might have something great hiding under the carpet. Take down the curtains -- those windows don't need any kind of treatment. Last, cover your radiator with a console table. I think you should do something really modern or sleek or get something built that ties into the wood of your staircase. Here are some examples for rad covers. Options are endless. The first is just a console table. The second has a good shape. I like the brass in the third and the dark wood in the last. Then make certain you have good lighting and a statement piece of art or a huge mirror over the console.

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... Unfortunately that staircase does not conform to Building Regulations because it has no handrail and is over a 600mm rise, unguarded and the gap between the treads is too big.

Gloss is now not so popular for paint. Satin or matt is the way forward.

The house is 45 years old, it’s not a new build, therefore it does not have to comply. It originally had a hand rail but the previous owner for some reason removed it. We intend to fit a new one.

I think the walls under the stairs area a shame, maybe to consider storage elsewhere to open the space and maybe a glass brick wall that allow light from living area through the stairs
