Building and Home contents insurance

Hi Everyone,

I think I was sleeping on this one, home contents and building insurance. Not yet taken one out and nearly forgot about it!! I was reminded by the builder today, so will crack on.

Any recommendations or ideas on Home insurance, specially during the refurbishment period?

The policy is only as good as the seller makes out when you need to make a claim. I tend to shop around each year and do contents and buildings together for a slighly better deal.

I have just dealt with the Halifax for a kitchen insurance flood claim at work and it has reminded me never to use them. Shocking. Would only offer the cheapest labour quote, which ended up with the customer having to have it all done again because of the poor standard. Lots of other things also occurred.

And yes do ensure your builder is insured

Find a broker to help you find an insurer as there are not many insurance companies that give cover while the builders are in. Expect to pay a higher premium for your first year because of the building works- but if the builder is finished in a few months then you can replace that first policy assuming there is a cost advantage.

You should also check the builder has insurance

Hmm... since the B&B is red too, wouldn't it be confusing? Because I thought that the foxfire would be a useful colour for giving directions: 'look for the large red building'. And then all your guests end up on the doorstep of the B&B. Mind you, it will work the other way around too ;-) I love that warm red colour with the grey roof.

You can paint the inside of FP opening charcoal and then I would go for a blue/grey and not greige. Those colors tend to be very dark. You have black furnishings and a blue/grey would look very fresh. Your art above FP has blue in it, so replace rug and get some pillows for sofa that will bring in the colors of the painting. Why not just put in some shelves, one big enough to hold tv. That would give a more open concept to room. If you need one enclosed to store components, that would fit also. I would not build up too high on the wall.

May be I could take something out for 2 months? For the dust to settle on the refurbishement?

I guess it will come with higher premiums though

Hi Mel, we took out short-term unoccupied property insurance for my mums house, as she had gone into a care home. You can insure for shorter periods and explain it is unoccupied and being refurbished. I can’t remember who we used unfortunately. Insurance is crucial so do it as soon as possible.
