Acer (or other tree) suggestions for shade

Hi

I have a light well that I want to put a potted tree in (see picture).

I really like acers but the challenge is the area does not receive any direct sunlight. It is not a dark space as such, it gets indirect light, just no direct sun.

When I google acers it says many like “partial shade” but is my light well actually full shade? And if so, is an acer not advisable?

I currently have a potted purple acer tree in my garden which is flourishing in the spot it is in my main garden. This would look perfect in the light well but I’m worried it won’t like having no direct sun.

If anyone with knowledge could recommend if my current acer might be appropriate for my light well or if any other acer/non-acer tree might be better here (Ie potted with no direct sunlight) I would be very grateful!

Difficult one. Acers are beautiful but they are temperamental. They are woodland plants so like dappled shade and hate direct sun. They need a sheltered spot out of the wind. Your location looks ideal - shady and protected. I’ve lost two Acers in my garden - both shrivelled up and died despite being happy for many years. No idea why. I was chatting to a professional gardener the other day and she also stated they can be difficult. If you like that Japanese look then have a look at Cornus Florida or Cornus Kousa. Again they are woodland shrubs but my Florida is really doing well so I feel confident in recommending it. They both have lovely flowers. Hi Antoinette I too live in Ireland in a Semi Detached. My husband who's the one with green fingers has transformed our garden into an oasis you wouldn't think we lived in a housing estate. You might start with cleaning the slabs. You could change the edging tile with a contrasting one to set it off. Use different sizes and colours of pots. A seating area in one section. Use lots of different colours and plants which are ok to grow in pots. Just seeing all the colours come to life in Spring and Summer will cheer you up. Here are some photos that were taken at the end of summer last year the leaves have started falling from the trees. Oh yeah still have the clothes line up too.

Thanks. Beautiul space. Can you please take a photo of the wall that is across from the island? -there is no overhang on the counter...so I am not seeing stools there on either the long portion of the island or the shorter portion by the window. -if you mean by the window, there is a door on one side and an oven on the other.....hence it is a traffic way,,,,,,you don't want stools there I am not sure why you feel the need to put something there. You might consider art on the wall across from the island to ground that wall. Need a photo.

What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. Also, how would that bright area around the front door look painted a shade a bit closer to the color of the brick and stone areas?
