Front door for my house - going from old red door to more modern

Hello -

We need to replace our front door due to functional issues, but while we're at it we want to go with something that is a bit more modern. We are also planning on painting our house a bit of a lighter color and darkening the shutters.

Anyhow, attached is a picture of our house. We want to replace the door with something in a darker maple stained color with some windows and sidelights as well. We plan to keep the framing around the door.

The door style and sidelight style we really like is from thermatru in the link below (their high quality brand), but in more of a dark maple color. Does this work? What do people think?

Your home is in a Colonial style -- especially with the ornate frame around the door-- the door you are considering is a Craftsman style. Consider going very dark and glossy -- navy, hunter, or black whichever will go with the new shutter color. Have fun with it!

Agree with above. i like traditional sleek black doors and shutters on a colonial with a nice black roof. very classic. and dont paint the brick! your house is gorgeous as is. the painted brick will require maintenance forever and date the house to 2022 trendiness. search colonial door styles, they are typically what we think of as six panel doors but can vary widely in style. see below for an idea of where to start your search for an appropriate door style. good luck!

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

With a sliding door, you can have each side different to match the style of the room it faces. Here are some ideas that, believe it or not, are done with sharpies on flat surfaces. I can envision a "fireplace" on the lounge side. On the dining room side, you could do the "double door" look, by putting half on the door, and half on the wall next to the door. So when the door is closed, it looks like a pair of doors, but when the door is slid open it looks like only one door (but it's the wall!) I added the 3rd picture just because I think it's so cool. I believe the only "real" thing in the room is the glass table/desk, and the filing cabinet.

Your old gold chair color is a bit hard to match with today's color palettes which usually use a softer gold. Have you thought about taking a blue into the dining room? Blue and gold is a very elegant combination and will compliment the mahogany floor and table. You could look for a stripe or a damask for the drapes or a wallpaper that would incorporate your chosen colors. An oriental rug would be a good way to tie in colors.

Paint the wood floor with a flooring paint. If you want to be creative, you can create your own special design. I've had painted wood floors in a previous home and everyone loved them. If you get tired of it, paint them a different color! Saves doing rip out and better for the environment! My floors held up well. I was surprised. I even did a faux marble floor for fun.

You can use the website ProVia.com to upload a good photo of your entry door area and then select door styles to see how it would look.
