Stained Glass window as a feature

Hello, currently doing a rennovation on our new (old) 1930s Arts & Crafts house. We have 2 beautiful stained glass windows in our lounge on either side of a fire place. They are on an East facing wall which runs alongside neighbours side fence, with trees obstructing sunlight, so not so bright there.

I'm wondering how to make these more of a feature with some soft lighting - any ideas? There will also be a tv in the corner on the same side so we would sit watching tv with the windows in front view. And wouldn't want to be distracted form any strong lighting to the windows.

We are at first fix stage and need to decide in next week!

1) Was thinking to mimick the sun from outside in to get shadowing on floor. But too difficult and probably costly.

2) Thought of spotlights, but however subtle, may be distracting and glare-y.

3) Thought of subtle strip led light above or below, but would have to find a way to disguise them.

4) Best option seems to be a very small low light upward spot lights - either in the middle of the window sil, or one on each edge of the window sil...

Any other thoughts?? Please?!

Have you thought about a nice trim around them like in the arts and craft style, you can paint it whatever colour or keep it natural both look really nice the natural is a little more eye catching. Or an arts and crafts up light either side of each one, such as the image below which is not as eye catching so wont draw attention from the window itself.

What’s your plan for the alcoves? Maybe build out some lower cabinets install a wall light over each window?

These are interior doors, right? What if you replaced the glass entirely with a wood shutter that opened and closed, then you wood be able to let light come through when you wanted, and shut them for privacy. It would also look nice. Like this: or

I love dark walls and I think your hall with the shiny floors and the right finish on the wall make it special. You already have the wrought iron, which definitely dictates a certain look. I hesitate to recommend a specific color from my monitor, but look at the BM colors in the 1037’s through the 1078’s and see if there is something there which looks good with the tile.

This might sound a bit like being on the fence given the advice you've had already... How about a mid to dark grey ( less contrast than black), RAL 7022 is a favourite of mine (warmer grey), or look at a green grey, as something that will have the colour of the olive, with a good amount of contrast against the white render, (you won't have the warm rich colours of the brickwork as in the photos above (which the olive looks good against)). If you are painting the timber windows you would do well to look at microporous opaque stains to reduce your on-going maintenance. A benefit of aluclad composite windows is colour outside can be factory supplied different to the interior finish. Hope this might help. Regards, Nick

Hi Kate, you may not be allowed to plaster the dash as sometimes house fronts are protected. For colour try Indian yellow from Farrow and Ball. This strong colour is associated with your style of house and has the advantage or drawing the attention away from the dash and onto the lighter colours. ie. windows and doors. To save costs Farrow and Ball colours can be mixed into other branded outdoor paints.

wow these are super ideas thank you Naturally Allard and Wumi - hadnt thought of a surround, that would really frame them nicely and alcove great idea too, might be tricky here as we will have a long low tv unit beneath. Thank you again! More help pleas to come!😁
