DESPERATE kitchen extractor help

Hi all

We’ve ordered the wrong extractor for above our island and now I don’t want to order another and go wrong.

We don’t want something to imposing, and ideally not cheap looking either.

Does anyone have any links, websites help and advice they can give?

So close to the end now and just want to get this kitchen finished

P.S it’s not a new extension so not a lot of room in the ceiling

You're right about thinking everything through beforehand @HU-29303451 and that venting outside is preferable, but:

- Not sure where these "golden rules" come from about no hob or sink on the island. If the infrastructure can be put in place, why not? I've just put a Bora hob on our island because it means I'm facing our beautiful view, and my family/guests while I cook, not facing a wall. I briefed that in to our architect right from the start. It's being wired in this afternoon after about two years in the planning and building! I'm delighted to nearly be in a position to cook in a comfortable, well-extracted way which doesn't mean I have my back to the room. I'm not a fan of sinks on an island but that's personal preference, not because there's a golden rule about it.

- We've gone for a venting Bora but recirculating is a little more sophisticated than you imply - these extractors include filters which extract grease and smells from the air and release "clean" air back into the room. People often combine them (as far as I understand) with a wall-mounted extractor fan and there are some regulations to follow here if you have a wood burner or open fire in the same room.

@Chris Blowers if I were you I'd be considering a recirculating extractor plus a good powerful but quiet wall-mounted extractor fan on one of your external walls.

I agree with 'Kitchens and Baths', you are leaving yourself precious little counterspace to accommodate 2 side-by-side wall ovens? Can't you stack them if you need 2? Also, a warning, I wouldn't be taking anything out of those ovens and "turning to the island" with them...not with a quartz countertop!! You'll have that whole end all scorched...unless you are quick and accurate with lots of trivets! But your "open shelving" is going to look like a pinched-in forgotten corner pantry...you really need more space for them too , if it is going to look right. Right now as it is, 2 feet of them are all but beyond reach (over the lower countertop) and then a mere 2 feet worth of actually OPEN, available space you can reach, then the monster of the floor to ceiling cabinet will be in the way. It will be like reaching around into a closet. I would seriously reconsider this design BEFORE your electrician shows up--and before you order all those (expensive!) cabinets. But as for the island 'crowding' the walkway--it looks as if your drawing says 1.2 meters? That's plenty and more than enough, even for running boisterous kiddos, you're fine there. Best of Luck.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Don't be swerved away from hand painted tiles! The best way to add colour and originality (I make hand painted tiles so I may be biased). I would take the tiles to just under the bottom shelf, and up to the hod. We have had tiles behind our cooker for 21 years, and we don't find the grout staying clean a problem. By the way - I think subway tiles will look dated in a few years, as anything bang on trend tends to do.

Hi both
So the original is in the photo below. We may keep it, but to do so would mean creating a false ceiling to put it in. Not sure if that’s the way forward or not.
It’s an island hood, there’s no outside vent.
Apologies for not explaining very well. This stuff isn’t my strength lol

You'll need smething like this, doesn't need to be boxed in:

Or a box needs to be built and an extra flat extractor can go in with a grille on the side of the box.

Both options would require a coal (or plasma) filter.

Also make sure the extraction rate is enough for the volume of the space it is in (the cubic metres should be refreshed within the hour or so).

We got ours from www.devinedistribution.co.uk as we wanted an extractor that didn't look like an extractor. It was expensive but it is very well made. We don't have it up yet as we are still in the process of having the kitchen fitted. We also looked at www.elica.com but these were more expensive. The one we got is below

Notes from a lifetime of property development.

1. Kitchen Islands seem to be very "trendy" at the moment and lots of people are fitting one without a good reason. If anyone is considering an island, the golden rules are; no sinks, no hobs. Always think about the infrastructure.

2. Whatever you are planning in your kitchen, the time for considering extractors etc is at the very beginning, not at the end. Ventilation is as much a part of infrastructure as electricity, plumbing and waste.

3. Hobs on an outside wall wherever possible. Aids ventilation (think infrastructure).

4. If it isn't venting to atmosphere, it isn't an extractor, it is just recirculating. Why bother?

5. No experienced professional would even start work without having every aspect of infrastructure planning set in stone. How are these people continuing to find work?

The purpose of an extractor is to remove grease and fine dust from the air. Cooking supposedly creates a lot of fine dust. The difference between recirculating ones and 'venting' ones is moist stays in the air, so humidity needs to be adressed by another system/window. The plus side is it doesn't pull warm air out of the house. Do remember to change the filter at least once a year, or when the air that comes out starts to smell stale.

Most people fit an island to create a social cooking experience. I spend the majority of time at or beside my hob so the idea of not having this on an island and having my back to everyone would defeat the purpose of having an island in the first place. No idea where those 'golden rules' are from?

Extraction is governed by building control Part F, so if your kitchen is in a new extension a recirculating extractor may not be suitable unless you also have a wall mounted 60 lit/sec wall mounted 'xpelair' type extractor. Even if you're just removing an internal wall to extend a kitchen if your existing kitchen had external extraction you can't make it worse by having just recirculating extraction. This is all supposed to be checked off by the electrician. For the size/extraction rate of your extractor you should look at about 10 room changes of air per hour so if your kitchen is 5m x 4m x 2.4m your volume is 48 m3 so your extractor needs to be rated at over 480 cubic meters/hour (m3h). The other factor to consider with extractors is noise, measured in dB and the lower the better.
