Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Paint or Stain? Wall to wall or display unit?

Hi, I am redoing my living room and have the below blank wall. I can't decide if to put wall to wall floating shelves like in the example image or to put a bookshelf with display units on either side.

Also if I am doing wall to wall shelves, not sure if to paint them a colour (or white to match the wall) or to stain them to match the beams. Please any advice?

I have attached a pic of what the room looks like when standing at one end. on the wall opposite to the current blank wall (where the current bookcase stands) I will be putting up a fireplace so the bookcase needs to go. Planning only to have the fireplace on that wall.

The stained shelves look good BUT thats because they're in a nice colour to set them off, I wouldn't go that route if you're keeping the walls white.

Hello Debbie, Why not give a company like Opopsi a call.. They may be able to print something bespoke for you.. They also do canvases or Mural type.. I have not used them as yet but I think they could help.. I would say no to borders and maybe consider a wallpaper idea.. I think they do that too! Maybe you could even consider a more bespoke arrangement rather than lots and lots of photo's some could be overlapped or semi transparent so you get the effect of double exposures but with different images.. So it's more creative than a tile effect.. .. : ))

Hello, We are looking for some advice on how to finish this wall in our small living room. The chimney breast wall only comes out 13cm so our first idea of console tables won't work. We are therefore thinking of getting a built in unit that will be about 35cm high - to the socket which will extend the length of the 3 walls, this has been done in other houses in our estate. We are thinking of a nice wood veneer and painting it? Would we possibly paint the chimney breast wall the same colour or the two other walls and leave the middle one plain? All ideas and suggestions are greatly welcomed! thanks! First two pictures are our living room currently, and third picture is an idea of the unit.

.If not white, I would paint the wall and shelves the same colour- definitely not the same as beams. You want your possessions to be displayed not the shelves to dominate. Colour would depend on your taste, but I would choose neutrals or 'sludgy' colours.
