I want to do a floor to ceiling photo wall and need some advice

Hi, I want to do a modern floor to ceiling photo wall (a montage of 6x4 photos in a grid) on my chimney breast and was looking for some advice. Any recommendations as to whether to go with white or black borders on the photos? Also should I use matt or gloss photos? And has anyone done it before and did you put a cover of any sort? Plexiglass or other?

The room is currently painted yellow and there's no fireplace - just a chimney breast sitting out. Plan is to put a round mirror in the middle to break it up but like the look of them and a good way of displaying some of my thousands of photos!! Photos will be colour - not black and white!

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Hello Debbie, Why not give a company like Opopsi a call.. They may be able to print something bespoke for you.. They also do canvases or Mural type.. I have not used them as yet but I think they could help.. I would say no to borders and maybe consider a wallpaper idea.. I think they do that too! Maybe you could even consider a more bespoke arrangement rather than lots and lots of photo's some could be overlapped or semi transparent so you get the effect of double exposures but with different images.. So it's more creative than a tile effect.. .. : ))

Hi Debbie,

I would say have no borders on your photographs. We have something similar in store and we have them finished in Matt. A glass finish could add a sheen to the look especially if you have any lighting near. We have hooks attached to the wall and then the photographs attached by a Bulldog Clip.

I think you should consider houssaon's idea of painting it the same color as the walls. Is the top of the tv console painted wood or is it a stone or composite? In the pictures my ipad shows me speckles (not dirt!!). My ipad sometimes *lies* to me. :) If the gray is the prominent color in the paint, maybe a darker gray would be a good choice too. If you are happy with the gray/green color next to your bookcases, then you should be able to pick a gray that would look good with both the new paint, and the bookcase. Gray next to the fireplace shouldn't be a problem :)

I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

I must say I find the tall ones , a bit disproportionate to the rest , try it with one third off, (the top sheets) and lets see . I would then align the middle tall one(now reduced) to the bottom of the one next to it ,then I would also reduce the distance between all the frames to about 4" in between. Even if the display is not the whole length of the stairs, as long as the distance at the bottom of the stairs is the same as the distance at the top of the stairs, it will work,

Thanks for the advice - like both of those ideas. I've ordered my photos, no border and matt and will start playing with ideas/collages when I get them. Took much longer than I was expecting to look through my thousands of photos and pick out a couple of hundred but first step down! Thanks for your help!
