What to do with internal garage? (Cheap as possible!)

Help!
First time home owner and looking for inspiration what to do with the garage attached to the house- we would like to use it for storage and a basic utility room, but not sure where to start with it? Hoping to also move the boiler from the bathroom to the wall in the garage.
There is a pit on the floor - would a builder be able to easily fill it and create proper flooring?
Looking for any advice/tips really.
We would like to try and source our own traders rather than paying a company to do a full conversion to save costs, but don't really know where to start!

During my sisters refurb she had her garage turned into a utility room, downstairs loo, and at the end (garage door end) she left as storage. I think a builder could easily fill the pit for you. I personally would employ a good builder who can call on the necessary trades as required. It could be quite a headache to try to source them yourself at the right time. My sister also changed the garage door to a barn style door so access in and out was easier.

My integral garage is my kitchen overflow area. i have my second fridge and freezer in here along with shelving storage for the grandchildren’s toys close to the kitchen door. Down one complete side we have cheap units and worktops fitted into which are stored paint, old books and general junk.

I would use plants to brighten the space. The hardscapes are all good, they just look a bit naked and grim. It can be hard to make a space pretty but usable for the kids too, but its not impossible. You have a lovely sitting area to enjoy. Plant some lovely feature bushes in that gravel area. You don't need to completely hide the clothesline, but having something pretty and showy in front will create a boundary and the eye will be drawn to the plants instead of the washing. If you can't plant into the soil there, some large size pots will work. Maybe some medium sized (1-2metre) ornamental trees in pots, like citrus, a weeping ornamental cherry, or bay trees, moptop robinias are nice too. They will be compact. You could cluster some pots of herbs underneath or plant them and let them ramble a little. Herbs like thyme and rosemary and lavender will suit the gravel area and the heat and be hardy with kids playing around, the odd bike falling on them or crushing underfoot would be quite okay. bulbs in pots or planted around the edges of the lawn are great value low maintenance and hardy colour. You can get great seasonal variation in your view then. Online bulb stores like tesselar and garden express sell bulk landscaping bulbs at very reasonable prices. You can get hundreds of bulbs for $30-50. Bulbs are great hardy plants that won't be killed by the odd soccer ball either. The flowers may get knocked over or the leaves, but the bulb is safe under the soil. Cheap and cheerfuls like nasturtiums are good value colour that will self seed every season. Also, plant some very bright flowering shrubs behind the soccer net and against the far wall. Maybe some hibiscus? You need something to catch and entice the eye, plant some large flowering shrubs with larger or bright flowers or foliage you will be able to appreciate from a distance.

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

Hello kswardrobe, Well some thoughts are... can you put in some internal glass doors? This would allow light to flow from rooms... Presume the bedroom has a window but is north facing? Is the front door also part of this hallway? Can you install a door with glass too? So the hall can benefit from light in this way too? Other things would be to leave doors open so that light from rooms can flood out into the hall.. Further ideas are well placed mirrors that bounce light.. What is on the walls? Does this hinder the feeling of light and airy.. light flooring would also help here too.. :))

If you wanting to move the boiler, consider an outside boiler. It's brilliant, saves using up indoor space. We recently replaced our boiler, was an outside one anyway.
