I need help to get in light.

We have a dormer bungalow, but there is no natural light getting into the downstairs hallway and one bedroom. What do you suggest?

Hello kswardrobe,

Well some thoughts are... can you put in some internal glass doors? This would allow light to flow from rooms... Presume the bedroom has a window but is north facing? Is the front door also part of this hallway? Can you install a door with glass too? So the hall can benefit from light in this way too? Other things would be to leave doors open so that light from rooms can flood out into the hall.. Further ideas are well placed mirrors that bounce light.. What is on the walls? Does this hinder the feeling of light and airy.. light flooring would also help here too.. :))

My husband is the same! Just my opinion but as they're both chandeliers I'm not convinced it will work. Could you get a cheap light for by the woodburner? Either something hung lower than the chandelier or semi-flush in a different style. Maybe something contemporary as a contrast? I know that's not ideal re budget but you may be able to get a bargain in the sales. Do try just holding the light there though when the room is built and take a pic as i may be wrong..

It is a gorgeous room with lovely features. I would second Minnie's colour choices, I have Farrow & Ball Pale Powder in my bedroom and it is a gorgeous colour - like an Eau de nil but changes colour throughout the day and is very soothing. I have dark wooden floors and dark brown leather sofas like you and I think I'm going with Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light when I come to decorate to give everything a lift, a pale rug is also a great idea. The cabinets you mention I would choose white to go with your existing bookcase and also to keep things light against the walls. This is currently my inspirational living room pic, the walls are borrowed light.

Perhaps you could create a slot in the roof to allow light in possibly using mirrors to deflect the light into the depth of the rooms?

It's tricky to comment without knowing the layout but we also have a dormer bungalow. Our hallway is very light as we have a velux window above the stairs and a half glazed (stained glass) front door. Could you used part or full glazed internal doors to borrow some light? Is the dark bedroom internal? you would need to work out where to borrow some light from if your hall is dark too. Could you introduce obscured glass panels somewhere? Like beside/above the door.
