That is one ridiculously complicated stairs, but I'm sure a competent joiner could remove the bottom section and build a new straight part. Stairs like this are generally built in (sort of) sections, so the straight flight will be one solid board on either side going to the newel posts and then the curved part will be built onto that so taking it apart shouldn't be difficult, just a bit messy.

How many steps are in the main section? It might be too many for one flight if you make it straight.

Hi Jada,

In a single flight of stairs you can have up to 36 risers. If more than that is needed then it’s required to have a change in direction. If the picture shows all the steps it looks like you should be well under that total. A carpenter will be able to change the layout to the base of the stairs easily but you may find the length will go further into your hall more so than it does now.

Agreed all with above, you could make more of a feature of the bottom rebuilt steps though... if they are sticking out into the hallway area it would look a bit odd if they where just standard style/standard handrail... projecting out the stairs 'announces' the stairs more, so give them a reason to be 'announced'.... just a thought to consider.

One possibility is to install a fitted cupboard beneath the window, where the current landing is off the bottom two steps. That would give you something on the left to run a straightened staircase beside, and minimise the impact of the new bottom steps projecting out into the hallway.
