Garden/decking access

Hello everyone - looking for some thoughts here. Have gone round the houses on this and need to decide before we commit to a new kitchen design. Really struggling though.

We currently have two French doors out into the garden - one in the kitchen, one in the main lounge. The one in the main lounge goes out on to the decking where we do a lot of BBQing/drinking so for me I would like to have some better direct access to the kitchen for the cooking and socialising.

Would you stick a door in where the window is and then brick up the kitchen french doors (put in windows for light - it’s west facing so needs as much daylight as it can get)?

Any help/thoughts are much appreciated 🙂

I think if your thinking of the possibility of changing windows and the costs involved. I think I'd just extend the deck/paved area out and pop the BBQ closer to the kitchen and keep the area near the lounge a outdoor lounge area. So you'll have a L shaped outdoor area. 👍🏻

Yes, I'd extend the patio/deck area, I am actually gobsmacked that you'd consider bricking up those patio doors as they aren't close enough...... you could switch your living room and kitchen?

Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

If you are worried about the hallway being dark why not have a fully glazed door into the open plan area at this bottom of the stairs. This would allow you to see straight through the house when you walk in the front door and make the hallway feel much brighter and less closed in?

Thanks Ellie - you can see how too much time at home during lockdown has got to me and why I need help 😂. I probably didn’t explain myself that well either that it was also with a thought on better connectivity between the living room and kitchen too. I agree the initial thought of bricking up is overkill and perhaps a moment of madness though.

Depending on your furniture placement inside, but would it be an option to either expand the opening for another set of french doors in the window location or a single glazed door here? Giving more access and light, almost creating an openness in the rear rooms.
