Which colour to pick out?

Hi all,

I'm finally getting around to our hallway and am very unsure which kind of colours/tones will go with the flooring. I had originally wanted to copy a beautiful picture I'd seen with blue walls, but I realise this would look odd. :-(

When I look at the floor, I tend to see red/russets, but I don't really like reds very much. Which colours would you pick out? The far door will eventually be blocked up, so the only natural light is from the front door (north facing). I'm trying to avoid cold/dark, but I also don't like bland.

Can you perhaps share photos that show more of the flooring (which seems really interesting) and a photo in the direction of the front door?

Thanks ED. The floor is c1910 and I've not really seen anything else like it, except for a local hotel of the same age.

My camera isn't great, but the hallway isn't as dark as it appears looking towards the door. (Please excuse the mess!)

I do not see velvets and silks for a kitchen sink window sorry. There are plenty of gorgeous fabrics around with beautiful damask or geometric pattern that are striking, that could be found in a faux silk or linen. Velvet is something that I would never put in a kitchen. But it is your kitchen.

I would ordinarily recommend that you don't mix cream/ivory with white as they can often clash, but you have pulled it off with the worktops! bringing in more white in the form of the glossy table will only enhance the look you have already created. the only other option would be a glass table with white chairs or stick with the accent colour of subtle grey for the chairs.

you know what? my house is not traditional, and yet, i somehow managed to buy an oriental rug for my living room (as you can see from my photo) i've seen so many wonderful oriental rugs, it took me a little while to choose. but my problem was, i was looking online. finally, i just went into a store with my husband, and we chose together. there are thinner ones and thicker. so depends what you want/need. i went for thicker. because these rugs have several different colors in them, i think you can choose from quite a selection and not be too worried. me personally, get nervous with too much light colors, as i have a dog. but the great thing with these rugs, you can barely see any dirt or marks (if any?) i think they have good choices and prices at boundary-mills and costco. i do understand also, about you not being sure cos of your patterned sofa. don't over think. i have seen soooo many pictures of people just going for it and mixing patterns. i know you can find some on houzz. i'll have a look, too. my living room even has some tartan in the curtains. one sofa is solid and the other two have stripes ha and i think it works with my rug. MAYBE, take a picture of your sofa. go to a shop with the rugs and put the photo against the rug and imagine. as for the 3 photos you showed, i like the creamer one and darker one.

You should lay them the best way for that particular room so if its narrow go width-ways, if its wide go length-ways. It is very common to have differing ways in the same home. Our Victorian house has original floorboards to the entire ground floor and the hallway boards swap directions when you get to the side return. Joists are usually laid to get the shortest span to avoid sag and thus the floorboards on top counter this so houses often have both directions.

The floor is gorgeous! And love the panelling! Check out Little Greene’s ‘french grey dark’- you could then choose whether you go with this for panelling with a lighter tone on the walls or with french dark grey on the walls and dark lead on the panelling.. would bring some nice vintage elegance!

I don’t see why you couldn’t go with something similar to your inspiration picture though I’d perhaps go with a warmer light grey / greige from the floor for the walls. Alternatively, go dark on the panelling - a dark grey or nearly black & then the lighter warm grey on the walls. I’d ignore the red tones & possibly pick out what looks like a mustardy yellow for some accessories or in some artwork.

Thanks both. I’ve always thought that inspiration photo is a light blue as got a bit fixated on that, and holding blueish colour swatches just looked wrong. I hadn’t even looked at greys, but yes, that would give the same effect. See, i just needed someone to point it out.

I have to stay with an off white on the panelling to blend in with the door. I love darker panelling but hubby hasn’t liked any of the pictures I’ve showed him, so I’ll concede that one. The rest is up to me though.

My new ceiling roses and light fittings have arrived, so I’m slowly putting the character back.

Looking again at Slow Coach, I rea like that middle row swatch, and I didn’t think I liked reds!

Mmmmmm, thinks again..... Would it look odd with French Grey Pale on the panelling against the white door? The door is new so hubby wants to incorporate it somehow, which is why I assumed white.

JB if you want to keep the walls and door white then I would say french grey dark panelling would look better- will just pack in a bit more punch considering the floor. See the pics for the combo effect. So excited for you!
