Floorboards which direction?

We got the floorboards in the hall laid out differently to the living room. We did this as we didn't want our sitting room to look narrow. Now we are getting an extension and both our builder & floor supplier think we should take this opportunity to 'fix' it. Will changing the layout make the room plus extension look narrow?

I think it's a waste of time and don't mean to nit pick but be wary of your
Builder and floor supplier...of course they suggest it - it means more work and money for them.

Ah I should have mentioned the floor has to come up anyway while the extension goes in as the kitchen is moving from the front of the house to the back so pipes etc need to be pulled through.

Are you English? sometimes a small room can look bigger with all over pattern, say a toile or a floral,,repeat it on the walls, either upholster the walls and use it for drapes, or use the same pattern in a paper as in fabric. It will cozy up the room, and hide any quirks in the architecture. To put a small shade on the window is to draw attention to it and the fact that your bed is offside. Keep the bed it sounds nice. A small room like that wrapped in pattern is a delight I think.

Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two.

And also there is some original tile left and I was toying with the idea of tiling over that strip all the way to the wall to create a small corridor of tile as you come in the front door for the 'hallway' that once was, to add interest and a sense of separation between kitchen and hall because the door opens into the kitchen directly which isn't ideal (we had to do away with a small pocket door and partition wall there.) and then do the rest in marmoleum. Would this look weird or should I just do the marmoleum throughout?

It's difficult to say without knowing the size of your rooms. Does the hall need to come up too? If so, why not re-lay that floor to match?

You should lay them the best way for that particular room so if its narrow go width-ways, if its wide go length-ways.

It is very common to have differing ways in the same home. Our Victorian house has original floorboards to the entire ground floor and the hallway boards swap directions when you get to the side return. Joists are usually laid to get the shortest span to avoid sag and thus the floorboards on top counter this so houses often have both directions.
