Furnishing dilemma

I have a confusion how to furnish my 3.45mx5.7m living which has so many obstructions. I just want to make it seating area with television. It has the door almost in the middle of the room so I can't seem to find a good size sofa to fit in. So please advise how to furnish this room.

Next to the door there's a radiator (on the left) On the opposite wall there is patio door around 225cm and a window 180cm with radiator underneath.

One problem is that your curtains aren't full enough for the wide window. Houzz might have a formula but I found one here: http://www.ehow.com/way_6038775_many-should-hung-double-window_.html. Also, try this: remove the tie backs and let the curtains fall naturally. That should help a little with the fullness. Then buy pillows that bring in those colors. You can also add color to that bookcase by painting it the same color as the wall for a more built-in look. Add more collectibles or books to the shelves. Then find a large graphic poster for that long wall. Next pull the sofa and chairs closer to the fireplace so that they have at least two feet on the rug. Pull the end table closer to the furniture. Drop the picture on the right of the window down about 5". It's way too high.

Sorry, yes, I didn't explain very well, did I... I meant that as your room seems to be quite light, floor included, a dark grey that matches the bird on your wallpaper would give you that wow factor (pic1 below). You could then work on the layering textures within the same colour palette too with the rest of your accessories (rugs, mirrors etc). Or if you're not too keen on greys, pick out one of the other colours if you prefer- you have a good selection of pink, blue, green or yellow. As long as you match the exact shade you can't go wrong, in my humble opinion. I've attached a few pics below to show you what I mean xx

Hello there :) I am new to this forum but I'd like to see if I can find a good idea for my dilemma. I'd like to refurbish the interiors of my countryhouse in Italy, a small villa with a huge living room with a lot of light and a nice terrace. It used to be my grandparent's house and was furnished in the 60's. I am mainly focusing on the living room at this stage and I have furniture similar to this: http://www.bachecaannunci.it/adpics/vetrina_2_bis619.jpg I love minimalistic interior design and I am trying to understand if you've ever seen any kind of refurbishment that would include keeping such furniture. Hi Pam, didn’t notice you’re dilemma before, just had a look at it. Milky Way mural sounds interesting. Although I’m a bit confused as to which wall you were thinking of putting it on. Is it the long wall where the fireplace is? The mural itself is most likely to be very dark in colour and like you say quite difficult to tie in with traditional furniture. But it could work with with jewel tone soft furnishings (emerald green, teal, wine red etc. in sumptuous fabrics like velvet and silk). You also say you have a conservatory garden wall mural upstairs on the landing, I imagine this to have a lot of green colours so I think anything downstairs should also have an element of green to link the colours through the house and create a better flow. Personally I wouldn’t put it on the fireplace wall as I think it would be too overbearing but the area where the dining table is would be nice and you could link it on the other side of the partition with paint colour and art. Was definitely thinking you need a rug in front of the sideboard as you come in from the hall.
