replacing roof timbers

I need to re-roof an old farm-house. It is an "A" roof and will have a 27foot span. The walls are of stone construction and are 150 years old. It is a two storey house. I would prefer to have the timbers cut on site. What are the disadvantages of this method compared to factory manufactured trusses, which is what has been recommended by my planner

Need more info to give you good advice. Is the House finished inside? are all the Rafters rotted? Some Pix would help. Based difference is factory built is less "Site Friendly" and will need exacting measurements. Field built is much slower and the building is more exposed to weather.

That was most helpful. All the rafters will need replacing. Much of the existing structure will be altered or demolished, as it is in very poor condition. I would like to have as much access to the roof space as possible in the new situation. This could be used for storage and maybe to convert some of the space for living at a later stage. I think this would be easier to achieve with an traditional built roof than with a factory type truss.

Garden design on line thanks for your graphics we have a similar deck structure to the side of the house- its more protection from the elements we need at the front of the house. Dyctecture i had considered a floating canopy but couldn't visualise how it would look- thanks for the mock up. But I do need more shelter as we live in the west coast of Ireland and the weather here can be pretty wet and windy!! This is the main access to the house and on a wet day the entrance hall can get very wet. Gildaville, I like the idea of following the existing triangle shape but definately need a roof- i just can't visualise how it would look and what material it can be constructed from. I really appreciate your replies.

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Was it sprayed all over the roof, Jon? We had similar in mine. Very hard to get a consensus from 'experts' on if its good or bad, but iI settled on advice that foam should only be sprayed between joists and not cover timbers. Ideally a vent card should have been used as well

If you are doing a complete reno. I recommend factory built truss designed as a "room Truss". These will give you the most useable space while helping you meet the new codes that require R38 in the ceilings/roof. google room truss. Good Luck!
