How can I make my dormer bungalow look tidy and fresh?

I want to tidy and freshen up the house. in needs to look less 70s.

When we bought the house we renovated the inside, I was having a baby, so it seemed to make sense to do the inside first. We had the windows replaced, so I’d prefer to keep them. The roof needs to be replaced, as well as the facias, soffits and guttering (lower level done) and the rendering needs to be sorted. The black composite door isn’t old, but is very dark against everything else.

l‘m considering render downstairs and composite cladding upstairs. The roof would be synthetic slate - grey. I need to do something about the door surround and lighting too.

Any ideas? What would you do?

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. I prefer the colour of the real-life pic than the idea you have. In real life the colour looks fresh and bright, the image looks dull and grey.

A soft mossy or grey green would be my first impulse but Sarah's dark blue looks good. It depends on your kitchen ware. White porcelains will pop with the blue and earthy stoneware will go more with the soft greens. I'd add a shelf to extend from the cabinet across the tile and a pot rack or hooks over the stove.

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Also a flat box hedge coming over the top of the boundary wall could be nice too.. It will be lovely and green.. : ) )

Hi. I think the overall look is good. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open

If it's possible, I would remove the door surround. If not, then paint it white and put a light either side of it. Perhaps use dark cladding, like the front door colour.

Drain pipes never seem to blend in! A thought would be to paint to blend the pipes to the color of the walls, or white, rather than black. But overall, the more natural rock and cream looks great, and in the duller winter months be brighter than a grey scheme. As suggested, giving the door a white surround will tie it to the windows, yet provide a strong contrast. Do that and you might find the whole facade feels more connected and less in need of a total overhaul.
