Living room looks unfinished

We have a big open plan living area. this is our sofa / tv area. feeling like it’s unfinished.

thinking of:

1. painting the tv / fireplace wall a similar colour as rug, 2. move the bookcase and replace with a grey arm chair

3. buy get the same unit (which is on one side of the chimney) for the other side

would that work?

does any of you have any other ideas?

Hi. I would turn the rug round. The tv looks a little high for comfort but obviously a personal choice. I agree with adding a chair And would also add a floor lamp behind. Maybe add a plant on the table in the corner?

I would try farrow and ball light grey on the wall/S.

I think you’d benefit for, some built in storage on that back wall similar to the image minnie101 posted. I’d paint the shelving any wall showing a different colour too.

Two ideas. Both times I would block up the entrance to the second half of the room to make more usuable space. Both ideas have a island with a dining table attached. Obviously these drawings are not to scale but everything should fit in. I would utilise the kitchen cuboards for utilities- intergrated appliances. If you can dont forget to use the space under your stairs as well. Also use the long wall at the bottom of the stairs for extra storage and alcoves.

I think black, cream and gold is quite a classic combination unless you wanted more colour? Perhaps a side table or low console to the right of the fire but keep the profile lower than the fire. I would change the mirror for a larger one and add something tallish on the LHS, agree re painting skirts, would do these in the ŵall colour though to maximise ŵall height and also paint the door. Perhaps a glass coffee table with a rug under the sofas? I would keep the rug similar in tone to the floor. You could also try arranging cushions either 2/3 on one side with just one on the other to move away from a traditonal look but do bring in the gold and pattern. You could try just a grasscloth on the fire ŵall. I would also add art. If you choose black frames keep the frame fairly thin. Also agree re tv unit.

Hi, We recently moved into a new home and we're redecorating two adjoining rooms. It's myself and my wife at the moment, and in around 6 weeks there'll be a little one joining us :) Here's an album of the two rooms with a floor plan https://photos.app.goo.gl/w4d77HhJhGxuUdGt9 I've arranged to get the floors refinished over the next few weeks (once our 'lock-down' is over!). The room without the TV will be a dining room/office combo, it's south-facing. Generally, they are quite bright when all doors and blinds are open, but the windows are not huge so there aren't awash with light all the time. We're having real trouble deciding on a colour scheme. Could anybody offer any inspiration? For the furniture, the main thing we plan on keeping is the sofa, the rest is likely to be changed. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca, Congratulations on your new home. I have quickly sketched out the floor plan of your room in 2D and 3D. For the first option I placed the 2 seater in the window alcove, however I dont know the height of the window so this may not work if it is a large window as you dont want the furniture to obscure the window. I totally agree with having the built in units either side of the fire place. If you can find some other room for your bookcase then pull forward the sofa on the back wall and put a console table behind it with books or ornaments on it and change the rug to a more subtle colour.

I think the room would look very smart with built in shelving and cupboards which I have got and love it. I think a one colour rug or jute/sizal rug would give the room a very rustic feel especially on the dark wood floor. Black and white is very polished and a lovely focal point. A console table with a couple of black framed photos and flowers I’ll second and the whole look will rock your place!

I suggest some houseplants, although it may be difficult as the room seems dark. Even some good artificial ones would help. Also, replace those speakers on the wall with pictures, or some really nice framed photographs.

You can get an interior stylist / designer for a very fair price some offering single room packages for around £100.

Its worth going with a professional who can sometimes get the perfact look better and cheaper than you would have spent otherwise.

I think painting the walls sage green or navy would go really well with the coral. Coral can be overwhelming on a wall so best kept for accessories as you have done. Everything does look a little bitty so maybe a tv unit incorporating shelving would tie it together better. Ikea have lots of bookcase/tv combos in white which look really good.

I’d also consider changing the coffee table for something that ties into the other dark wood furniture. I’ve just pained my lounge wall navy and it looks great, different shades in different light.

Plus get a toy box that ties in with the furniture, even a rattan style basket one. ,I’ve little table next to sofa, maybe even add bookcase to one side of the fire if you don’t have the budget for the lovely shelving picture people have posted. Then out a light on the side table to heighten it and balance it out. I agree the rug needs to go the other way round. Speakers off the wall and add so,etching more decorative, as suggested. I also prefer a mirror over the fire and tv in a corner. So the fireplace will be the feature with a nice mirror and not the tv. But that’s just my opinion.

Am thinking your coffee table cubes need to be shaped into a square and brought closer to the couches/sofas. I am thinking the book case on one side is throwing the room off balance as it is tall and everything else is lower. I see a dark ladder (is it acting as a paper or magazine rack? or storage for winter throws?) next to the bookcase , see if that can be positioned on the other side of the TV to give some height on the other side. As others have said, some toy storage would help corral the lose material.

hate being critical but, I’d remove the book case in favour if a chair as you suggested, I’d change the rug for something else, ie colour and texture, remove the pic in front of the fireplace opening and have it in full display, even a few blocks in there for looks.

also think about a proper coffee table, something low, lastly store away out of eyesight the stuff heaped up in the corner, know it’s awkward if you have kids but it will look so much better

as you say you have an open plan area and its all painted white, I assume a contemporary look is what your after?

ps if you remove the bookcase then a few nice framed prints wouldn’t go amiss.

dont take offence as just my thoughts :-)
