Old Victorian house, narrow kitchen

Hi. Just bought a victorian house, which hasn't been modernised since the 60s. The house has a very narrow kitchen, leading off one of the rear rooms, I think originally it was a scullery. If you walk around the rear of this is an old toilet accessed via a separate door.

my question is, do I update this to a modern kitchen, removing the toilet, or, knock it down, making already learge garden bigger and then convert the room the kitchen was leading off into a kitchen

We’ve been looking at Victorian terraces with my daughter -we’ve been rejecting those which either have only one reception and a kitchen/diner or which are overextended so they have minimal garden. I think the optimal is to get a balance between the kitchen extension and the garden space. If you go on Rightmove sold prices you can take a look at identical houses and see how they’ve configured the area, so you can decide what works best.

If you buy - then remove rooms - generally you are devaluing the house.

It will be worth significantly less than you paid for it.

Investing over a house's potential resale price to make it a long term home is one thing.

Actively removing value from it is another.

I would avoid the ' make garden bigger' option - look for another house if you want less rooms.

The undercounter or stacked machines behind cabinetry sounds great. With the machines under the counter you create a generous work surface above for folding clean laundry or for kitchen tasks. The advantage of a sunny exposure for laundry is that you can more easily see potential stains to be treated and little rips to be mended. My washer and dryer are in my kitchen area. The noise is not so noticeable in the kitchen as it is in the room that backs onto the laundry machines. Coordinating the timing of the wash and dry helps reduce the noise intrusion while that other room is being used.

What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. Also yes the room is small but that's not an issue - it is what it is and I'm fine with it!

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. The renovation and extension of an 150 year old narrow-terraced house left a blank white canvas. Hi! As it has already been mentioned, I would also keep the back room (maybe convert into an office looking to the garden? no floor plans so not sure if possible) otherwise you loose value on your property. Small and narrow kitchens can be modernised and renovated with smart storage solutions nowadays, so would look to do something where every inch of the room is well used ;) Victorian houses are quirky but that's what makes them lovely!
