Advice needed please! We want to get an en suite fitted into our master bedroom, but we have a bit of an issue with the soil pipe. The en suite would be at the front of the house, and the soil pipe is at the back. Also, the soil pipe will need to go cross a staircase. its on the third floor of a mid terrace town house. Any advice, help or rough cost ideas would be appreciated! Thanks 😊
You need a macerator pump like Saniflo. They cost about £150 - £200 and are very easy to fit as part of a refit or new bathroom.
It reduces the size of the soil pipe to 22mm and allows vertical flow so you can take the soil pipe up through the loft space and then back down at the back of the house or under the floorboards on the first floor. It makes it possible to have a bathroom pretty much anywhere in the house.
I suggested it to friend for his ensuite nearly 2 years ago, he's never had a problem. It's used as their (family of 4) main bathroom because they live in a Victorian terrace and the actual main bathroom is downstairs at the back of the house.
Also fairly straight forward for plumber to replace.
your options? I guess they are 'macerator', boxing-in the soil pipe probably along the skirtings and then down in a corner, or - the best solution, but most involved - re-route an underground soil pipe to the existing drain so that you do have one on that side of the house.
Going through joists with a soil pipe is expensive and not safe. So that is not an option.
Core a hole through outside wall, fit new stack, & then connect into existing pipe run.📷
And by the way, there many out there who will say definitely avoid a macerator, nothing but trouble, especially if things are put in it which shouldn't be (that happens!), they block and then you have ''trouble'' everywhere. Heard stories of it coming up through a basin, bath & shower outlets, not pretty, even a basement ankle deep. Sorry for the picture, better to imagine it than to have it happen.
Thank you for your comments, it’s really appreciated. There is no way we’d be able to have a pipe put under the house, especially being a mid terrace, that’s just not an option unfortunately.
I had hoped the macerator pump would be a great option but now I’m a little worried... I will look to see if there are any reviews on these pumps to get a full picture.
