Wooden panelling above bay window

Following a leak from the bay window roof (which has been sorted) I’m wondering how best to repair the wooden panelling under the roof. Planning to decorate this room in a week and I want to get this issue sorted before I paint. Can I seal between the wood? I’m not a diy expert so any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks!

Hi Alison,

Yes you can use decorators caulk to fill the gaps. You can paint directly over it.

Hello Jen, I am so surprised that no one has mentioned vertical blinds to you? They are very much back in fashion and work beautifully in a room such as yours. They come in 3.5" veins, which mean they will fold back and tuck into each recess when fully open. They turn to let as much light in as you need and then close when you want full privacy. They will be fitted in the recess above the windows. You can either have one complete rail length or two so you have a separate section over the door. You can have what's know as a middle split, i.e: half goes left and right. Personally I would suggest one length that opens to the left, therefore leaving your door completely uncovered when open. The pulley system is very much like a roller blind and are safety fixed to the wall so children can not get caught in them. They come in a huge rang of colours and materials and better still they are very affordable. I am working with a number of new developments in Hertfordshire at the moment and these are what the clients are all asking for. As a textile designer and as a householder, I have made dozens of curtains and blinds for all sorts of situations. Using my experience, I would say, the turn in the corners of your windows is quite sharp, not rounded, so I would not go for a bay pole which works better with larger, more rounded bays. Instead I would go for a roman blind, as these are more grown up/finished looking than rollar, which always look a bit bathroom/kitchen (maybe two small additional ones for the smaller edge window sections, make or get them made with black out lining (they hang better too) avoid brass fitting on those, they look very dated, go for silver instead, also avoid twee trimmings like fringe or braid edges. You could make these look extravagant, clean and tailored, rustic modern, or modern scandi, or however you want, depending on the feel of your room. If you want to soften that effect, you could use dress curtains on a pole (no plastic tracks please!) over the outer edge of the window (i.e. not in the bay) - these could be light voile (not nylons or polyesters, cotton or thin linen mix is best) or more lux (that way you don't need a lot of the fabric too, so less expensive. Again, whether you did that or not, and what fabric choice would depend on the look and feel of the effect you're after. I would look at mags or online to get the feel of the room your after first, then look for window treatments that go with that look, referring to points above as you do. Hope that helps!

This might sound a bit like being on the fence given the advice you've had already... How about a mid to dark grey ( less contrast than black), RAL 7022 is a favourite of mine (warmer grey), or look at a green grey, as something that will have the colour of the olive, with a good amount of contrast against the white render, (you won't have the warm rich colours of the brickwork as in the photos above (which the olive looks good against)). If you are painting the timber windows you would do well to look at microporous opaque stains to reduce your on-going maintenance. A benefit of aluclad composite windows is colour outside can be factory supplied different to the interior finish. Hope this might help. Regards, Nick

I love the cabin in the woods, its a intimate setting where you are drawn to the outside whilst keeping snug indoors. The use of fabrics sets it apart from the usual cold designs of other modern rooms. The attention detail in the selection of furniture pieces keeps it modern yet functional.
