Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Rooms

Design Help on Fireplaca Mantel and Sides

Hello. I’ve been rummaging through Houzz and Pinterest for ideas on what to do with this space and feel very overwhelmed.
The only thing I’ve decided is to install a simple wooden mantel above the fireplace. I’m not sure what to do with the sides. The shorter side (left) is 41” wide and 9’ high. That is where the cable TV hookup was installed so we would need a cabinet to house the cable box and DVD player. I’d like to have a cohesive and clean look to this area but don’t know how to put it together.
I welcome all recommendations. Thank you in advance!

I think your room needs depth of color on fireplace wall. Some concepts.

HI -- Well the wallpaper was just done so there is no changing that , soooo I think you should paint the rest of that wall the same white as the white background of the wallpaper and paint fireplace mantel too. Then have two small matching cabinets painted the blue from the paper or the leaf color placed on each side of the fireplace. . Then have white or glass shelves above , maybe three is best . Now the rest of the room painted the exact color of your sofa . Because the room looks small I think it would look best to have the sofa blend into the walls color wise. Now just keep some of your room accents in the blue color but not too much. Remember not to clutter the shelves and if you don't want the shelves then have a large painting on each side and have a big round mirror over the mantel and keep the small items off the mantel and onto the side cabinets .

Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Thanks.

For starters your T.V. is way too high lower it to sit virtually on the mantel and take all the stuff off the mantle. If you are getting storage built get 2 made so one on each side of the fireplace for balance. I don't see what you have for lighting now and find the finish on the walls very busy. When I look at your idea books I am not really getting that same feel in the space as it is so maybe some more pictures would help with that.

Thanks maumason I think you're right about the more vibrant pops of mustard yellow, and I definately need an area rug. I've photo of romans below, they're a charcol grey and the walls are a light grey. Blenheim I like your photos and do think white fireplace is nice with navy wall but I don't think I'll attempt to paint my marble fireplace! I do like that mirror in your photo and maybe something similar would look better than what I have. I think i've too much going on with the feature yellow on the fireplace and the canvas and perhaps why it looks out of balance. I think if I paintrd he fireplace wall light grey like the other walls, changed the mirror, and painted the wall behind the couch instead (maybe navy? Dark grey?) it might look more focused? I know sofa and chairs are a bit chunky and I don't love them, but will have to put up with them for another while. They are recliners and super comfy which is important for me though!! I do like my coffee table and tv unit, it's reclaimed pine and looks nicer in real life - perhaps it'l work better once I get my dream sofa!!

I can't zoom in close enough, but it appears that there is connection to mount the TV over the fireplace, which would make the most sense, as the TV and/or the fireplace are the focal point. The left side is way too small. When it comes to design and appreciation, it would be important to note whether or not you like the room as is, or not at all. Even designers have preferences. To help you in this situation would take more than a comment. Would be glad to help if you are interested.

Thank you for the visual feedback. The cable plugs were installed for the TV to be set above the fireplace. I like the idea of a few floating shelves on either side but would need something to store the cable box and DVD player.

Yes, the TV connection was installed to be set above the fireplace. Since the left side is more narrow than the right, I’m just looking for ideas to make is look balanced.

Wires can be moved easily. You are not required to set the TV above the fireplace. It's not the optimum height for viewing. Also, shelves along the sides should NOT be considered unless you have something lovely to show.

Still using cable huh? Have you considered changing to streaming? No boxes to store.

Don’t put the mantel too high or the tv will be too high. I personally prefer art over a fireplace and the tv on a console in the larger space on the right. I would consider replacing the beige tile with light-color stone tile which is a bit more current.

HI -- Keep that wall more minimal . I would reface the fireplace with a full panel of marble or granite and not have a mantel . And not have the TV on the fireplace . The right side looks like the best side for the TV , with an interesting console , bought or best , a built -in . If you do a built -in then a floating one off the floor . Then there are several things to do with the other side such as Art Sculpture on a pedestal or framed art or a huge plant /tree etc. Look at Houseandhome.com for more great ideas .

This is a nice simple FP please do not clutter the walls with a buch of stuff mainly best hidden Put the TV on the right side with a cabinet to hold all the “stuff” but low enough to hold the TV at the proper height for viewing. That is center of screen at eye level when seated. Hang a great piece of art above the FP to hide the electrical there BTW easy to change the plug and cable outlet. If you want a mantel then a nice thick wood one just at the end of the tile As for the left side a tall sculpture , a vertical piece of art or if you have some fab pieces to display some thick shelves like the mantel in that space.
