ideas for small garden

Looking for some ideas for our new garden.

My plan was to lay new turf and just generally tidy it up, but the evening sun moves to the back left area, see second photo.

Was thinking maybe a small patio area? Or decking, but concerned it in may look a bit strange. Any ideas? Happy to remove the trellis, have a larger patio area etc

It would definitely become more interesting garden if you create another patio at the back of the garden. You could use round shapes or angles to make the garden seem larger. But you could also go for simple straight lines. If you create a path towards the back patio, it won't look like it has just dropped from the sky. I would also widen the plant beds and fill them up with lots of perennials. What is behind the trellis?

Thanks Carolina, there is a shed at the back, but also quite a large space behind the shed (not sure why)

HI -- That is a big yard . Section off for your needs . Plan a patio and entertainment area close to the house . Then an area for the kids and then an area for a garden if needed and so on . Maybe build a little garden /summer house that has a fireplace or is screened in . Then the left over area you could just have it as a natural meadow with lots of trees where you don't need to mow grass -- the dog would love that . Add lighting too. Use some Eco grass ( no mow ) and lots of perennials and trees . Make a grove of trees like aspens or birches . Because of the size of your property , you should consult with a landscape designer .

It would help if you could post some photos as this gives us a better understanding of what you are dealing with. It would probably help your thinking if you draw out the space and really think about what your favourites plants are. A mix of some shrubs, climbers and small long flowing plants like geranium rozanne will give you year round interest. Remember right plant right place is a rule for a very good reason! Maybe talk to the neighbours about cutting back any branches on your side of the boundary?

Hi there, My partner and I recently bought a house and we are delighted with it. I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to gardening but I’d like to have a nice little back garden nevertheless. The garden is quite small but the size doesn’t bother me at all. The only issue I have is the bins in the corner (I’m hoping to get bin covers at some point) and the neighbour’s side wall which is currently being built. I know it will look much nicer when the building and painting is done, and thankfully these windows will be frosted as they are their bathroom windows. However I’d like to have some ideas to « hide » or change the focal point of our back garden when I look out my kitchen windows. Is there any tall thin trees we could plant in the back ? I’d like to install a pergola at some point or a decking area in the back but it might be difficult then to plant trees near the wall? Do you have any ideas of how I could do both ?

Looking for ideas for our 10mx10m back garden. The back garden faces SWW. We moved in to this home a year ago, and we've not done much to the garden. It has been beautifully landscaped, but I'm looking for ideas to modernise. It would be great to reuse some of the bricks/features but they're quite traditional looking so I'm finding it hard. Last point, ideally we'd like to extend the house a little, which would eat in to the bottom area of the picture. But only by 3m at most. Up to the bottom of the circle could be large french doors so a nice view port from that direction. Love to hear any ideas you guys have.

Hmm... that seems a waste of good space then. Do you think it would be an option to move the shed further down the back? (there are youtube videos on how to move a shed if you're up for it :-) )

If you stain the shed in a dark grey, black or dark blue and put some plants in front, it'll disappear into the background. Usually I'm all for trellis, but in this case it does look like the garden ends there, and that's a shame really.

Here's an example of a garden, similar to yours, where they have a seating area to the left and screening on the right. The pergola over the seating area and the planting on either side helps create a balanced garden. I think it looks good.

I think a second patio would be a great idea to catch the last bit of sun. I think trellis to hide the shed is great too and I see you have a climber (honeysuckle, wisteria?) growing on it which is great too. I’m thinking a nice circle for the second patio would be great with some seating. I’m not a fan of decking. It soon starts to rot (I’m speaking from experience) and it’s so slippery when it’s wet. My deck is 8 years old and already rotting in the damper corners. I would choose sandstone paving, which come in ready made circles if you want, or pavers are lovely. You can get clay ones which are pricey but beautiful, or concrete ones which are much cheaper and similar to your main patio. Love Carolina’s and embzop‘s suggestions!
