Small study/mudroom beside the entryway - missing an opportunity?

Hello,

We have always struggled with space for coats, shoes, bags, keys, etc in our tiny rented terraced houses. The house we are buying has a very small study in the front of the house, which we immediately thought we could use as a mudroom with a bench, and a closet for coats and shoes for the whole family.

I'm now looking at this again, and wondering whether we should consider removing that wall that separates the entryway from the study. We could still put a closet along the right wall (connecting the cloakroom and the front of the house). It would open up the entryway and perhaps make things more dramatic, and crucially it could let in some additional light... but is this the best use of space?

Overflow of shoes and coats, etc could potentially be stored in the garage...

Below are some images that were inspiring me re: our mudroom. There was also the idea that it could act as a 'command centre' for the household, with all important mail, documents, calendars, etc. and could keep the entry of the house uncluttered.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Definitely wouldnt remove the wall. Best to have it all out of sight!

The actual size of that study, hard to tell from the pics, but it will be classed as a room and you have paid the price eg for a 3 bed house. It will devalue your property no doubt if you lose it, but then if you are not planning selling....

I know I would prefer to have no jackets/boots etc in sight so having an actual room to put all that in sounds bliss!!! Most folk dont have that option!

Great idea. I dream of somewhere to put coats and shoes etc as my hall is tiny! By all means use the room as a boot room, but I wouldn’t knock the wall through as you are then removing a valuable room and, as Ellie suggests, you may be devaluing your home. I’m rather jealous though........

I agree - having space to put coats and shoes was a completely accidental bonus, but a rare benefit! I just didn't want to be blinded by my excitement into not using the space properly. Thanks so much.
