Tile vs pressed metal splashback

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me decide if tiles are better than pressed metal as a splashback. Have been quoted $1,000 just for labour (still need to add tiles and adhesives to the quote) to do our kitchen and compared to $800 for pressed metal. Our kitchen cabinet maker doesn't recommend pressed metal due to the join lines. Does anyone have experience with pressed metal? Thanks Leah

$1000 to tile a splashback? Either you have a very large splashback or your tiler doesn't want the job as it is too small. Most tilers quote a square metre rate for a straight forward job, such as splashback on a smooth surface. Most splashbacks are about 600mm high, and 4m long, so about 3 square metres of tiling. Tilers usually supply there own adhesive. I would get a few more quotes, find a great tile, and avoid the pressed metal.

    Best of luck,

Hi Leah, I had a pressed metal splash back in my kitchen. It was powder coated and never scratched. I lived with it for 6 years before moving and it was fine. Its a bit tricky cleaning (all the little nooks and crannies) but not overly hard,, not harder than dealing with grout. I didn't have a very big kitchen though and didn't require any joins. There would be metal trims that are used in floor applications (for example where carpet meets vinyl or timber) that might work on the join, you might just need to do the investigating on behalf of your cabinet maker. They are often referred to as C-channels and you could get them powder coated in the same colour so they don't stand out. If you contact Schotts they can put you onto a specialist pressed metal installer who might recommend a solution. Don't give up on the pressed metal yet, its just so beautiful!

It can look lovely but I wouldn't like it behind my cook top, maybe a section of flat stainless for that spot Maggie Beer had it in her farm kitchen on The Cook and the Chef

Hi Leah , Southern Cross Ceramics have Infinity tiles which are like pressed metal but they are about $170 + a square metre . I bought a similar tile from Beaumont Tiles for $49 per square metre .

    Hi Leah,

I came across this picture and thought you would really like it. It has been produced with 3D tiles as I mentioned in the previous comment. Get in touch if you would like some more info or tile places that stock similar tiles.
