What work surface do you have? If it’s dark and shiny it will reflect the light from a window or from the spots.

Thanks for these replies. Yes, wall lights. Lights that do the equivalent job as under cabinet lighting but without the cabinets. These are nice but I think a little too industrial and Victorian for what I hope to be a fairly minimal kitchen in a 30s house. I'm now considering having a thin shelf and having lights underneath it, but I'm still concerned about the grease trap!

I'm afraid we won't be going with a shiny work surface, more likely to be walnut at this stage. Also I'd like the lights as a softer alternative to overhead lights when we're eating. I rarely use overhead lights in the rest of the house unless I've lost something!

So, I'm looking for task lighting above each work surface. The overhead spot lights are already in place and won't be changed and they are slightly more to the centre of the room which means they cast a shadow over the work surface when you are standing there.
