How do people clean the limescale on their splashbacks?

We often get asked how to clean limescale marks on splashbacks, which have been accumulated by the steam from a kettle or from a boiling pot of water.

Limescale can be an annoying issue in most parts of the UK, if you suffer from a stubborn build up of limescale in your kitchen, how do you effectively clean it?

Everyone has different methods of cleaning, we personally love the idea of a hair dryer hack!

We usually recommend clients get their glass treated to prevent lime scale build-up in the first place (esp. on shower screens for example), so the glass has a protective barrier.

Are you sure the limescale is created by steam or pots of boiling water?

With my rudimentary understanding of physics I was under the impression the steam is only condensing water vapour and all the other bits are left behind eg. in the kettle. Hence why kettles get limescale build-up.

So if it isn't limescale as such (the type you get on shower screens for instance), then things like vinegar would be pointless.

And whilst we're on the subject, vinegar is an excellent and cheap limescale remover, which we often use in the house, but it shouldn't be used of surfaces such as marble or limestone.

You should have a professional installer in your area take a look at your home so you can discuss what end result you are wanting. You may need to use an engineered wood. This is still an all wood product and is much more dimensionally stable than solid wood. This is a huge advantage if you are in an older home or in the midwest where humidity levels can drastically change from season to season. A solid wood will cup or curl if humidity and moisture levels are not managed. Your installer should do a moisture test before installation to make sure the installation does not fail. All warranties will be voided if this step is not taken. Also, your transitions will need to be considered. Is the new wood floor going to butt up to tile, carpet, or vinyl? The height difference in the two products will need to be taken into consideration. You will have a greater selection of thicknesses in the engineered woods. Engineered wood should be several plys, all wood. If you choose a solid wood, the hand scraped versions are fantastic for a high traffic area with children. Hickory, Red Oak, most Brazilian Species, and even Bamboo are hard enough to take everyday traffic and still look terrific. Good luck!

I have a white corian and love it. It brightened the kitchen so much. I think the Only thing you can set hot pots on is ceramic tile. I have made trivets out of pretty tiles. Go to the store and find a tile you love buy one or two and then cut felt slides that stick, like for the bottom of a chair leg or buy precut ones. These are great! I use them on lots of things. They are under my coffee pot, toaster, large cutting board, garbage bowl I keep on the counter, anything I move that's kind of big or heavy on the counter. Corian requires no sealing. Only thing that has thought about staining so far was grated carrots, or the skin gratings from carrots. But then I just worked on the spot lightly with a scotch bright pad. I saw somewhere that someone else tried a mr clean eraser n corian. Staining in my integrated white sink is zero. Installed in January 2013. I have had corian in a previous house with no problems also.

I have same tile, size but a lighter grout. I'm doing glass tile backsplash, under cabinet lighting to make it really pop. New hardware on cabinets, painting cabinets. New sink, can't afford new appliances. But your kitchen is larger, light and nice counter tops. Don't have a clue what to do, white Formica and it's cracking, ugh. I like the wood effect tile. If properly placed it might give the impression of an actual wood floor. Well apart from colour i guess one would have to conisder how easy they are to clean with stains and all. But more importantly how slippery they are when dry, when wet or when there is a little bit of oil on it.

Ribena Drinker, you make a fair point. Limescale queries in general, may not be from the steam, but cleaning methods for a build up on a splashback surface in general.
