1 over 3 door handle height

Similar to a post I saw from 2016, I've came home to holes drilledrilled for handles at the "standard" height, around 1m. However they are on 1 over 3, 1930s style doors.

I think it looks completely daft. But Builder says this is correct and to change them will be my design choice. Surely on this type of door the handle should be at the horizontal panel?

They should be in line with the crossbar - my builder did all my door handles at the standard height, even though we have one over threes. I decided not to push it as we had bigger things to sort out, but now they really bug me - don’t make my mistake!

The handles should be higher above the 3 panels in my opinion. Here is a photo of my doors

A standard height for fitting handles is 3’6” or 1050 mm. If it’s a solid timber door where there is a dowelled joint if you put the lock in the rail it will take the joint away therefore allowing the door to come apart, so perhaps that’s why he has done it this way.

Perhaps the door fitter should have asked for your preference.

East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Is it something to do with building regs? I know that when light switches are replaced they have to be lower now, so it makes it easier for wheelchair users to reach, but I agree they would look better higher up

Builder says that the building control officer is likely to have an issue if they are higher. He can't find the regulation that says it though and neither can I.

I believe that building control would only be interested if this was a new build, which I don’t think it is. I agree with previous comments if you leave them they will annoy you in the end

This is our place (pre renovation) I am almost certain that the doors are original with original handle placement...

Just asked my husband... in a new build, door handles have to be 1 m high. In an old house, you are allowed to replace with what was there originally, ie: higher .

Hi all, I just read a post about door handle height for Victorian doors and then spotted this one. I think the other one has been active more recently but I'll post here too. We've just bought a 1930s semi and I want to replace the doors with 1930s 1-over-3 style, just like the ones in this post. I'm not sure where to put the door knobs (we want to use knobs rather than handles). My instinct is to go for the middle horizontal but it could be very high - 1130 or even 1190 from the floor depending on which manufacturer provides the door. I also want thumb turn locks on the bathroom door so need to allow room for that and therefore that door probably dictates the rest. I'd love your views! For people have put them on the middle horizontal, how high are they, and do you find them too high? I'm 5'5" but I wonder about someone smaller visiting (like my mother, or children). Thank you!!!

Look at the picture by nmlondon. The centre of the spindle should be in the centre of the cross rail. End of.

@sandgirl ours are high (level with the crossbar) and the big advantage with children is they can’t open them - saves on stair gates if you can just close the door and know they can’t get into a room you haven’t childproofed!

My youngest got locked in a bedroom at his aunties as he couldn’t reach the door knob! Luckily he is noisy 😃

Ah yes I forgot I also had the door foam stoppers on doors they were allowed in to stop this happening- also stopped trapped fingers!

We've got some issues with the bathroom door since we moved in, but we got used to it and didn't paid too much attention to that door lock. A few weeks ago, my daughter locked herself in the bathroom, me and my husband tried to open that door on our own, but after a couple of tries my husband decided to brake the door. This "genius" destroyed the door, tore it to shreds. Of course we had to buy a new door, call a handyman to install it, of course we had to call a locksmith in west norwood to install a good lock. Gladly we had to change some other locks too, so a locksmith was more than welcome at our house, my husband was not happy too, he had to pay for all that.
