Help with studio apt floor plan and colors
I am moving into a 21x17 studio next month and I am in one currently that is cluttered can be. I want this one to make sense as far as layout, less is more approach with purposeful items and pieces. The studio is painted Benjamin moore misty gray. Not sure what colors to use, esp for the new couch. I tend to go overboard and then I have no cohesive color or design in my house. Need some ideas for where to put the couch, a small bar/kitchen table, tv...but most importantly to start...what colors? I want to buy everything new but am baffled where to start! Please help!

5 years agoDo you have access to a floor plan with measurements? You have a very neutral backdrop, so you might start by listing your personal favorite colors. Then make an ideabook with rooms having those colors. Start looking for apartment sized seating so you don't get pieces that are too big. Is this a "junior 1-bdrm." with a cupboard sized space for sleeping or what? How do you want to use that area out in front of the double closet doors? Here's a way to make that into a private bedroom space if you need to.

Comments (33)Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. It looks a very creamy cream ! Think it could be stunning ! Then have slightly lighter walls and tiles to keep the room feeling light and airy ! 5 years agoReally need a one dimensional floor plan with dimensions etc. The colors you mention can work together. I would stick to as simple of a color combo as possible. The space will get busy quickly.

these are the two couch options I have decided to choose from because they are inexpensive enough, convert into a bed, with the moveable ottoman that opens for storage. Also, they are a good size for the space not too big but not as small as a love seat. Torn between how to arrange it with possibly a chair as well and if I def will choose the beige or gray option. Thoughts?

heres some pics today of some pillows I was putting together for some ideas... But didn't want it too busy. Maybe solids for the square pillows and then the more abstract one for rectangular. Liked some velvet ones but remembered someone said linen or natural fabrics are better

5 years agoOkay Elyse here is my recommendation.
First I would place a tall book case with the shelf portion facing the space you would like to place your daughters bed and on the back I would wall paper it in a wallpaper with a nice graphic pattern. On the back side of this I would place a TV on a TV console or cabinet, your preference but by getting one with doors or drawers you will get more storage. As you can see from the floor plan I created for you the rest is somewhat self explanatory. I placed a small dining table on the far wall of your main living area for a place to eat, work, do homework whatever you. might need. For chairs there I would get an upholstered or slip covered chair that you can also use for more seating should you have company. A parson chair would work. I wasn't sure if the sofa you shared with us had a chaise. I included it but when I searched it our on the Ikea site I didn't find it with the chaise. For a coffee table you won't have much room with a chaise so I would consider doing some garden stools. I will attach some pictures of the items I'm thinking of. In the area outside of what will become your daughters room ive placed a large dresser. This can be used as its meant to but by placing two lamps on top you can create essentially a hall table and bring more light into the space. This rendition is to scale and I took the measurements of a child bed as well as the sofa from Ikea you shared to show you how they would fit in the space. Hope this helps.

5 years agoLooks like everyone's studio apartment in NYC! Nice bathroom, lucky you!! Here's a floor plan that might look crowded on the plan, but it's not if you are careful with your purchases and keep everything the same tone with color in the accessories and art and bedding.
At the entrance consider a narrow bench at the foot of the bed and Ikea shoe cabinets with a mirror above across from the bed. I would add an interesting bookcase on the left of the shoe cabinet, like the zigzag bookcase below.
Tuck the bed next to the closet, with a 18" wide nightstand on the closet side. Drawn in is a queen size bed and it can overlap the wall edge if necessary. This area can be very special with art, dramatic headboard, bedding and lighting. (see below) When facing the bed, on the right side, close to the living area, consider the Ikea fabric panels from ceiling to floor. It will give you a slight separation from living and sleeping and avoid the room looking like a hotel room. (Even though I myself have been in hotel rooms I could easily live in forever!)
One of the most important walls/corner in your apartment is the far left corner, across from the kitchen. That corner will set the mood and invite you to enter the room. get a sofa (as large as possible) with a left facing chaise, leaving 48" from the kitchen to the end of the sofa. Place a narrow 12" console behind the sofa for lamps, books, trinkets and a very large piece of art above. Nesting tables will give you the versatility when you have company.
The sofa should be the color you love most and the brightest tone of that color you can find. The shelf console behind the sofa can be a simple Ikea LACK shelf, butting several for the full length of the sofa back.
In the kitchen have a narrow simple counter high table butt the column with two small scaled stools. This will give you additional workspace for the kitchen also. If you can, have it made in formica (lots of colors available) or painted metal in a great color as shown in the pic below. I would stay away from a wood tone to keep the entire style light.
Mount the tv on the wall above a simple white cabinet. You can continue the white cabinet with drawers around to the sofa, or get something special and unique. I always find incredible cabinets on craigslist for cheap. That could be a showstopper. Make sure it will serve as a dresser with lots of drawers.
I love studio apartments. It uncomplicates life as we know it! If I could, I would have a studio in every cool city in the world! Hope this helps.

5 years agoExcuse the proportions as this was my first time quickly playing around with this feature. ;-). I forgot you had a window until i finished this so let the mirror represent the window. I did floating shelves over the dining table on that wall. You will have plenty of space for art work and photos. In the entrance do two fun table lamps on the dresser and a mirror on the wall above it. Usually I’d say a mirror is best when it’s reflecting a pretty view but in this case it will be optimal for throwing more light into the space. You can do a gallery wall to the left of the dresser still. For the bathroom if you want to carry the colors you mentioned you like before int that space I’d do it in towels . Instead of painting you can use large matting in your frames in those colors. Some fun flow art in the colors you want to incorporate would be a great way to bring in color to the small space and won’t compromise the light reflection an overall paint color might. If i were to do any painting in that bath room I’d go for a light airy spa blue color. It will keep it light in there and work well with the marble like floors/tile.

5 years agoLadies, I have ordered a lot of furniture but not all because I want to wait until it arrives to get a feel for the space and didn't want to over do it without an idea on how it will all fit. I shopped for some small things to get ideas. Heres some pics and any feedback on decision making is a big help!
any thought on these side tables?

5 years agolove these natural wood top small tables that can be placed side by side at diff lengths to make a coffee table look (table I'm referring to is above the long entertainment center piece) I'm not sure if I would def need a coffee table or want one. So it could also be a side table... Also liked the round cylinder one, can I mix these materials and still have it be a cohesive look? I want to make sure the pieces make sense look wise but I like so many diff styles not sure what the rules are for combining them. Also any thoughts on the entertainment center stand?

then there was this TV stand which was a little less cost wise.. Could also double as a kitchen piece too cause I will need a place for my microwave... But wasn't sure if it was a keeper or not lol

5 years agoloved this side table! But again, how do I stay cohesive with the design style? All these wood finishes throw me off not sure how to mix furniture pieces or style without making it too busy... Also my friend suggested that these tables are so low.. My couch is lower but what size do I want to go with? Lastly... I haven't chosen a rug yet but been looking.. Might find a more ombre stipled looking neutral one is what I'm thinking... Maybe in cream and beige tones... But I don't know what size yet. Not sure if it should be the length of my whole couch, or if it should exclude the area that the ottomon/chaise section will be. I see this done either way... But not sure and don't know if maybe I could get a second small rug for under kitchen table to increase the emphasis on seperate kitchen/living space... Is that too busy? Ahh! Sorry for These long posts but this has all been hugely helpful and I am really appreciative of the feedback and good advice! Also will be purchasing two accent chairs that will double as additional kitchen table chairs when needed, not sure about the placement of the chairs and if they should be all on same living room rug?!
