Recessed screen question

Love the look of this projector screen. I've studied this picture for a long time and can't figure out how you made it "recessed" into the wall, and include the arch...unless it's an illusion and you just applied a darker paint. Did you originally frame it this way? I built my entire basement alone, but I can't figure this out. Please help, as I would love to replicate. Thanks!

Hi Dan,

I'm glad you like our work! So yes, the white screen (which is just paint) and darker boarder are recessed about 4" behind the lighter grey walls with the speakers on them. We framed a normal 16" o.c. stud wall about 5" off the concrete wall behind. Laid out the arch and bottom of the screen, cut the studs, blocked it in and added furring strips to the concrete. It was drywalled and corner beaded, then we painted the screen and boarder. Hope I described it well enough...Good luck with your project!

You described it very well, thank you. Unfortunately, I won't be able to achieve that look, as my walls are done already with 2 x 4, 16" o.c. Maybe my next house haha. Take care,

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

;-) Thanks. Questions like that drive me bonkers. It's not just the laziness. I'm sure I see a different blue and beige (or is it tan, or ecru, or taupe?) than he does because I use a different monitor and have the screen set to a different color temperature than he does. Every paint company warns you about the lack of accuracy of the colors on their websites. That's the nature of computer monitors. And that's a studio set, with colored lights shining on it. Who knows what that color is? Or even which color he's asking about, sheesh.

Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! Thanks again for the brilliant advice, I really appreciate it.

Frame another wall in front flanked by two deeper faux columns to get the depth. I know...we all have ideas for the next house!
