Love your designs! Homes are gorgeous. Question about windows. Just had my Marvin Integrity Low-E3 windows delivered. Glass looks dark and greenish. Have you experienced this? Windows of this home appear dark, too. Thanks!

That is odd. Are you sure the color isn't being picked up by your surroundings? Most all window come with Low-E3 as the default. Check your specs and call the local Marvin rep. They are often more than willing to come to your house and talk with you. The only way to get a true historical clear look is to order single glazed (which is horrible insulation quality) and specify clear plate glass. People have ordered this before and it is super clear and the view from the exterior is pretty cool as you can't even see the glass, but condensation and heat loss will be an issue. Double pane insulated glass is tough to make perfectly transparent because you have two shiny surfaces about 1/2" apart reflecting against each other. Are you separation bars between the glass silver (raw metal) or bronze?

Thanks for the quick response! We are now required in our jurisdiction to have energy efficient windows - mandated under the Building Code. Calculations were done by our designer to get the U-factor. I'm sure we'll like the efficiency but I feel we sacrificed in design. Windows have SDLs - black Ultrex outside, painted wood inside. Even the stickers on the inside of the windows look green when looking in (!). Just getting ready to install - will have to see if that helps. Again - you should be proud of your homes. I admire them!

I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Take a good look and visualize day and night views creating with mirrors designed into a "today" style and look.

Firstly -- what a lovely home! The classical styling is very nice. Regarding the door color vs. trim color -- how dark the tones are compared to each other is the first thing to consider in this case. If the tones are similar, it may look very coordinated. In other words, I would prefer a charcoal along with a medium / dark blue. Compare different tones to see what works best for you. The second thing I would consider is the undertone of the grey. It will look one way at your kitchen table in planning stages and another way entirely next to the yellow of the house and the blue of the door. If you can determine the undertone of the grey -- great! That may help you to choose the type of blue to work with. If you still are having troubles after that, consider a blue with some grey in it. Have a lovely time of it. Color is a great thing to play with.

I have to agree that glass film is brilliant- we used Purlfrost online. You can either pre measure and they will cut for you you or you can buy a piece and cut to your own specs. It arrives rolled in a tube. We've done two rooms- the living room with full frost and the other, a bedroom- with just the bottom half of the window covered which looks pretty modern and sharp. It was supposed to be a temporary solution till we got shutters organised but it looks so effective and fresh that we've decided to save the small fortune that shutters cost! The help line was great- they recommended leaving a gap around the edge near the frame for a beveled glass effect which did actually work! You can get different levels of opaqueness - we used the less opaque for more light but still private- or patterns or stained glass effect. Its really easy to apply yourself too, and apparently comes off with no damage to the glass at all, so good if. Works out really economical as well. Can you tell I'd recommend it?! :)
